Z Niels Wilhelm Gade Biography Niels Wilhelm Gade (February 22, 1817 - December 21, 1890) was a Danish composer, conductor, violinist, organist and teacher. He is considered the most important Danish musician of his day.
Gade was born in Copenhagen. He began his career as a violinist with the Royal Orchestra there before sending his first symphony, turned down for performance in Copenhagen, to Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn received the work positively, and conducted it in Leipzig. Gade himself moved to Leipzig, teaching at the Conservatory there, working as an assistant conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and befriending Mendelssohn, who had an important influence on his music. He also became friends with Robert Schumann.
He returned to Copenhagen in the late 1840s, becoming director of the Copenhagen Musical Society (a post he retained until his death) and establishing a new orchestra and chorus. He also worked as an organist and was joint director of the Copenhagen Conservatory with Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (whose daughter Gade married in 1852) and Holger Simon Paulli, and worked as an organist. An important influence on a number of later Scandinavian composers, he encouraged and taught both Edvard Grieg and Carl Nielsen. He died in Copenhagen.
Among Gade's works are eight symphonies, a violin concerto, chamber music, piano pieces and a number of large-scale cantatas, Comala (1846) and Elverskud (1853) amongst them, which he called "Koncertstykke". These are sometimes based on Danish folklore.

Niels Wilhelm Gade
Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817-1890), of Copenhagen, who was considered one of the most important Danish musicians of his day. After a thorough musical education Gade received in his native city, he attracted wider attention in 1841 by taking the prize for his concert overture, "Night Sounds from Ossian," the judges being Fr. Schneider and Spohr, the violinist. This gave Gade a royal stipendium, with which he immediately betook himself to study at Leipsic, where he came under the personal influence of Mendelssohn, an influence which he never outgrew.
At the death of Felix Mendelssohn he was appointed director of the Gewandhaus, the position he held only a part of one season, because he was forced to return to Copenhagen in the spring of 1848 when war broke out between Prussia and Denmark
Gade was joint director of the Copenhagen Conservatory with Hartmann] (whose daughter Gade married in 1852) and Holger Simon Paulli . An important influence on a number of later Scandinavian composers, he encouraged and taught both Edvard Grieg and Carl Nielsen , as well as lesser figures such as Otto Malling and Asger Hamerik
He was active as composer in every direction, his published works embracing eight symphonies, five overtures, two concertos for violin and orchestra, three violin sonatas, several cantatas for mixed voices, soli and orchestra, and many other works.

@import url(../index.css); Gade, NIELS WILHELM Practical Reference Library gah'de, (1817-1890), a famous Danish musician and composer, born at Copenhagen. He was first compelled to learn the trade of a cabinetmaker under his father's instruction, but soon abandoned it to begin a course of musical study. At the age of sixteen he made his debut as a concert violinist. He won numerous prizes for composition and through the aid of the king completed his education at Leipzig, where, in the absence of Men-delssohn, he for a time directed the Gewandhaus concerts and became permanent conductor in 1847. Three years later he returned to Copenhagen, where he became master of the Chapel Royal and director of music. Gade was one of the leading figures in the new romantic movement in music and received the highest honors from leading critics and musicians of his time. Among his compositions the best known are probably the Erl King's Daughter, The Springtide Fantasy and The Crusaders.
