THE D'O YLY C ARTE O PERA C OMPANY Edward German Edward German (cond., 1902) [Born Whitchurch, Shropshire 17 Feb 1862, died London 11 Nov 1936] Edward German, full name Edward German Jones, studied the organ and violin at the Royal Academy of Music. He won the Charles Lucas Medal for composition in 1885, and in 1889 was appointed conductor of the Globe Theatre orchestra, where he provided incidental music for Richard Mansfield's production of Richard III He went on to compose dance and incidental music for Henry Irving's production of King Henry VIII as the Lyceum in 1892, as well as numerous other orchestral compositions for the stage and music festivals. While he had offered to compose an opera for Richard D'Oyly Carte in the early 1890s, the offer came to nothing, and German had virtually no experience in opera or choral music when he was asked by Carte to complete the score for The Emerald Isle following Arthur Sullivan's death in November 1900. The opera had a modest run at the Savoy (205 perfomances from April to November 1901), but the music was critically acclaimed, and German was engaged to compose a work on his own. EDWARD GERMAN
Edward German, knighted in 1928 for his services to music, was the successor of Sir Arthur Sullivan in the field of English operetta. A composer of some versatility, he wrote little after 1910, feeling out of sympathy with the new age in music, which by then had dawned. Operettas The patriotic comic opera Merrie England was staged at the Savoy Theatre in London in 1902. The stirring Yeomen of England vies in popularity with an aria for Queen Elisabeth I of England, O peaceful England, while I my watch am keeping.

Edward German
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Sir Edward German Sir Edward German (17 February 1862 – 11 November 1936) was an English musician and composer of Welsh descent, best remembered for his extensive output of incidental music for the stage and as a successor to Arthur Sullivan in the field of English comic opera As a youth, German played the violin and led the town orchestra, also beginning to compose music. While performing and teaching violin at the Royal Academy of Music , German began to build a career as a composer in the mid-1880s, writing serious music as well as light opera. In 1888, he became music director of Globe Theatre in London, also providing popular incidental music for many of its productions and those of other London theatres, including Richard III Henry VIII (1892) and Nell Gwynn (1900). He also wrote symphonies, orchestral suites, symphonic poems and other works. He also wrote a considerable body of songs and piano music, as well as symphonic suites and other concert music, of which his Welsh Rhapsody (1904) is perhaps best known.

What a pleasant surprise! Although this may not be the greatest of music, it is full of interest. These are late Victorian pieces and the titles reminded me of many pieces that I played as a boy with these simple titles such as Melody and Reverie While some listeners will waste time in trying to find influences of Chopin and Mendelssohn in these pieces they would do far better to simply listen to and enjoy them. The opening Valse Fantastique lives up to its name and is played with scintillating finger work. The

Edward German (1862-1936)
Edward German (originally Edward German Jones) was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire, in 1862, where, in his teens, he organised a local band and taught himself the violin. In 1880 he went to the Royal Academy to study the organ and the violin. After leaving the Academy in 1878 he was briefly an orchestral violinist before being employed as musical director at the Globe Theatre. He composed highly popular incidental music for plays, including "Richard III" (1889), "Henry VIII" (1892), "Nell Gwynn" (1900), and others. He also wrote symphonies, orchestral suites, symphonic poems, etc., of which his "Welsh Rhapsody" (1904) is best known. After Sullivan's death in 1901, German was commissioned to complete his unfinished opera "The Emerald Isle", and he also wrote his own operetta "Merrie England" (1902), to be followed by other operettas ("A Princess of Kensington" (1903), "Tom Jones" (1907), "Fallen Fairies" (1909)). He thus came to be regarded as Sullivan's legitimate successor. His music is generally characterised by lightness and grace rather than depth. He was knighted in 1928, and died in London in 1936.
