Gershwin, George
b. September 2, 1898 - Brooklyn, NY, USA / d. July 11, 1937 - Beverley Hills, CA, USA
American composer and pianist. Gershwin is one of America's most important musical figures. Best known for innumerable songs which were written, often with his brother Ira , for Broadway musicals. Some of these have become staples of jazz players as well as singers.
Beyond his work in the tin pan alley style, Gershwin also wanted to produce art music. A few of his works have established him as an important figure in this field, especially his Rhapsody in Blue and the Piano Concerto

    Gershwin, George
Born in Brooklyn to Russian immigrants, George Gershwin was a composer with a remarkable ability to meld different musical traditions together in his work, incorporating jazz, ragtime and blues, classical techniques, and even Jewish folk music. He began his musical career as a song plugger on Tin Pan Alley, and quickly moved on to composing Broadway shows (with his lyricist brother Ira) such as Lady, Be Good! (1924) and instrumentals like Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928). The opera Porgy and Bess (1935) solidified his reputation as a composer. Many of his songs celebrate New York City, such as Harlem River Chanty (1925), Union Square (1933), and New York Serenade (1928).

    Biography
American composer, famous for show tunes, swing rhythms and his unique style of blending commercial pop, jazz and blues music with classical structure. He composed over 700 pop songs including "I Got Rhythm," "The Man I Love," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." His serious works include the opera "Porgy and Bess," and the American classic "Rhapsody in Blue." Gershwin attended Commerce High School in Manhattan, training to be an accountant in his dad's restaurant, but left at 16 when he was hired to play the piano for ten hours a day on Tin Pan Alley. His first break came three years later when his song "Swanee" made a star out of singer Al Jolson. Moving on to Broadway, he wrote scores for revues and musical comedies, notably "Lady Be Good," "Strike Up The Band," "Girl Crazy" and "Of Thee I Sing." During this time Gershwin enrolled in Columbia University, where he studied Nineteenth Century Romanticism in Music and Elementary Orchestra, filling his "tune books" with, ideas, song, and musical composition. Orchestra leader Paul Whiteman was presenting a jazz concert on 2/12/1924 entitled "An Experiment in Modern Music" at Aeolian Hall in New York. A press release went out announcing that pianist George Gershwin would compose a special piece for his orchestra, an announcement that caught Gershwin unaware. Nevertheless, the amiable young composer agreed to write a piece entitled "An American Rhapsody" and was given three weeks to complete it. Brother Ira, now Gershwin's lyricist, suggested the title "Rhapsody in Blue" after hearing the proliferation of minor notes in his brother's experimental composition, a piece that, according to George, would be a "musical kaleidoscope of America - of our vast melting pot...our blues, our metropolitan madness." The name stuck, the piece was finished on schedule, and the concert began.

    http://www.gershwinfan.com/Home.html
gershwinfan.com The music of George Gershwin is the hallmark of a native American composer who mixed the traditional orchestral setting with the truly American medium Jazz. Gershwin's musical hallmarks, such as Rhapsody in Blue An American in Paris and Concerto in F are just the most common of his orchestral works. Then there are his songs, many of which are written by the other Gershwin Ira. Ira's contributions to the world as a lyricist are often overlooked because of the greatness of his brother's musical stylings. However, Ira's lyrics are too essential to overlook. This site is dedicated not just to George Gershwin, but to his brother Ira as well. We hope you will explore and learn about these two American masters.
