Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires to a Catalan father and an Italian mother. He preferred to pronounce his surname in its Catalan pronunciation, with a soft 'G' as in 'George' ( [dʒinaˈsteɾa] ) rather than a Spanish J sound ( [xinaˈsteɾa] He studied at the conservatory in Buenos Aires, graduating in 1938. After a visit to the United States in 1945–47, where he studied with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood , he returned to Buenos Aires and co-founded the League of Composers. He held a number of teaching posts. He moved back to the United States in 1968 and from 1970 lived in Europe. He died in Geneva at the age of 67. Among his notable students were Ástor Piazzolla (who studied with him in 1941), Alcides Lanza Waldo de los Ríos , and Rafael Aponte-Ledée

Ginastera grouped his music into three periods: "Objective Nationalism" (1934–1948), "Subjective Nationalism" (1948–1958), and "Neo-Expressionism" (1958–1983). Among other distinguishing features, these periods vary in their use of traditional Argentine musical elements. His Objective Nationalistic works often integrate Argentine folk themes in a straightforward fashion, while works in the later periods incorporate traditional elements in increasingly abstracted forms.

Alberto Evaristo Ginastera (April 11, 1916 Buenos Aires - June 25, 1983 Geneva) was an Argentinian master composer of European classical music as well as a prolific nationalistic musician who preserved many of the folk elements of Argentina in lively compositions. Ginastera won great acclaim for his masterful juxtaposing of traditional Argentine folk elements with Western classical conventions. In so doing he demonstrated the ability to unify seemingly diverse musical styles into a harmonious and highly evocative musical expression. This was accomplished not by merely integrating existing folk melodies into his music , but was far more elemental, in that he would construct original thematic material, rhythmic patterns and harmonic progressions that were predicated on the intervalic, rhythmic and harmonic properties of actual Latin folk music. He was one of several important South American composers to achieve international prominence.

Ginastera, Alberto Evaristo Argentine composer, known for combining nationalistic musical idioms with 20th-century techniques. Born and trained in Buenos Aires, he taught at several Argentine conservatories and in 1971 moved to Geneva. He developed a personal synthesis of compositional procedures that draws on serial and chance methods of organization and utilizes microtones (intervals smaller than a half step), as well as using more traditional forms. His Second String Quartet, first performed at the first Interamerican Music Festival (1958), won him international stature. With his chamber opera Bomarzo (1967) he was recognized as a leading 20th-century composer of opera.

ALBERTO GINASTERA
Ginastera himself divided his compositions into three stylistic periods: objective nationalism subjective nationalism and Neo-expressionism . His most frequently performed works, including the Three Argentinian Dances , Op.2, the ballet Estancia and the Malambo subjective nationalism - although, for example, he still saw the role of the melody as very significant. Rhythmic contrasts, emotionally charged atmospheres, and strong oppositions between mounting and subsiding tension were still present, if less overtly, as symbols identifying his language (in works such as Pampeana No.3 for orchestra and Piano Sonata No.1, Op.22). Both the First Piano Concerto (Op.28, premiered in Washington in April 1962), and the Second Piano Concerto (Op. 39) belong to the third period: Neo-expressionism . In fact, this period began with the Second String Quartet, Op.26, of 1958 and continued with some of his most important works, such as the
