PHILIP GLASS
(b 1937 )
Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his collaborations with artists ranging from Woody Allen to David Bowie, Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. By the age of 15, Glass had matriculated at the University of Chicago, where he continued what had already become an exhaustive involvement with music. After graduation, he attended the Juilliard School, then emigrated to Paris where he studied with the legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger (who, in the course of her 60-year career, also tutored Aaron Copland Virgil Thomson Roy Harris Quincy Jones and several other important American composers). During his time with Boulanger, Glass also explored less-conventional musical venues, and worked intensively with Ravi Shankar Tim Page website View by Role: Classical Composer Lyricist Role: Classical Composer Album Title Catalogue No Work Category A TO Z OF CLASSICAL MUSIC (The) (2nd Expanded Edition, 2000)

Introduction
Philip Glass was a minimalist composer. He combined unique, repeating rhythms with non-Western devices to create music that was musical form at its bare essentials. He sometimes would repeat these patterns for four hours straight. These performances grew to bore, yet intrigue his listeners, and often his works would receive mixed reviews.
Historical Context
Philip Glass was born in 1937. His father sold radios and records. Glass would listen to the poorly selling records that his father would bring home and try and decipher the problems in their structure and their reason for selling poorly. Since the music that often didn't sell well were the older classical pieces, Glass decided to compose in a far different style. He attended the University of Chicago where he majored in philosophy and then continued to study music at Julliard. This young composer had already composed a dozen pieces before graduating from Julliard and many of them were very successful. However, he felt as if he had reached a plateau in his composing. He didn't believe in his work anymore. So he traveled to Paris on a Fulbright Fellowship. This is where he finally broke free of his sudden apathy with the run-in with Indian sitar-virtuoso, Ravi Shankar. Shankar asked for Glass to write his improvised music on the sitar so that western-trained musicians could play it in a film that he was producing. Here, Glass was rejuvenated. He began to explore a completely new type of music. He traveled to India, North Africa and even the Himalayas in search of new types of interesting music. This research led him to develop a completely new style in which music was based on short rhythmic phrases and static harmonies. He created an ensemble specifically designed to play his works.

Orange Mountain Music is a record company created to serve the fans, aficionados and academics studying the music of Philip Glass. The idea for this label developed out of a project undertaken by Kurt Munkacsi, (producer of most of PG's recordings and head of Euphorbia productions) and Don Christensen to archive all the master recordings that Philip Glass has made. Over the last 40 some years Philip has produced hundreds of hours of recordings in the process of creating operas, film scores, musical theatre pieces and records. Glass has also recorded many performances of his solo, operatic, orchestral and small ensemble work. In the process of archiving all of these master recordings we have discovered a wealth of beautiful and unusual recordings and some very inspired performances which we plan to bring to the public. We also bring recordings by other artists and organizations that have collaborated with Philip Glass. An iTunes exclusive release

in conversation with Thomas Moore The following interview took place on 10 October 1981, before a performance of the Philip Glass Ensemble at the Pension Building (the National Building Museum) in Washington, D.C. Thomas Moore: Could you tell us...about your new opera, which is Philip Glass: Oh, Satyagraha TM: Yes, which premiered in New York recently. PG: Well, it will be at Brooklyn Academy of Music in November, starting the 6th, and then I think our next date is the 7th, and there are about five performances. It's an opera which I wrote for the Netherlands Opera, so it uses an orchestra of around fifty, a chorus of forty, and there are about seven soloists. The opera... Satyagraha means truthful, so it was a name Gandhi used to describe his civil disobedience movement. It's set in the twenty years he spends in South Africa. He went there when he was a man of 21 in 1893 and he left in 1914 when he was about 42. So most of the major creative, I feel, events of his life happened there. A lot of his ideas were formulated there, his ideas of civil disobedience, of non-violence, and all that stuff. So I've taken seven scenes, seven moments, really, from his life, and made it into seven scenes. And, what can I say about it? TM: How did you get interested in doing multimedia works? First

Philip Glass - respected composer
modern composer and, along with John Cage and others, his work received some attention in the book "Experimental Music" by Michael Nyman . The relationship between the two composers goes deeper than this, because in some ways Glass was a leading light in the minimalist movement which was documented and named by Nyman before he himself became a practicing minimalist. Another curious coincidence (or is it?) is that the director Peter Greenaway created the documentary series "Four American Composers", one of whom was Philip Glass. Greenaway's film music is invariably scored by none other than Michael Nyman. Another example of film scoring for reduced instrumental forces (in this case a classical String Quartet) is his re-scoring of the original "Dracula" film starring Bela Lugosi. In this case, the restricted string timbre seems to perfectly complement the black and white images, and it's tempting to compare this decision with Bernard Herrmann 's string orchestra on Psycho. Much of the music for "Dracula" consists of repeated figures such as arpeggios which sometimes serve as accompaniment to a simple melodic line, though the music breaks into counterpoint for the Death of Dracula near the end of the movie. It is interesting to compare Glass's approach with that of
