Mikhail Glinka was born in the village of Novospasskoye , not far from the Desna River in the Smolensk Guberniya of the Russian Empire . His father was a wealthy retired army captain, as the family had a strong tradition of loyalty and service to the Tsar , while several members of his extended family had also developed a lively interest in culture. As a small child, Mikhail was reared by his over-protective and pampering grandmother who fed him sweets, wrapped him in furs, and confined him to her room, which was always to be kept at 25°C (77°F); as such, he developed a sickly disposition, later in his life retaining the services of numerous physicians, and often falling victim to a number of quacks . The only music he heard in his youthful confinement was the sounds of the village church bells and the folk songs of passing peasant choirs. The church bells were tuned to a dissonant chord and so his ears became used to strident harmony. While his nurse would sometimes sing folksongs, the peasant choirs who sang using the

(b . June 1 [May 21, Old Style], 1804, Novospasskoye, Russiad. Feb. 15 [Feb. 3], 1857, Berlin, Prussia [Germany]), the first Russian composer to win international recognition, and the acknowledged founder of the Russian nationalist school. Glinka's interest in music was aroused when he was 10 or 11 years old by hearing his uncle's private orchestra. From 1818 to 1822 he studied at the Chief Pedagogic Institute at St. Petersburg, also taking piano lessons from John Field and Charles Mayer. From 1824 to 1828 he served in the Ministry of Communications but was too indolent and unambitious for an official career. As a dilettante he composed songs and a certain amount of chamber music. Three years in Italy brought him under the spell of the composers Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti, though ultimately homesickness led him to the idea of writing music "in Russian." First he studied composition seriously for six months with Siegfried Dehn in Berlin, where he began a Sinfonia per l'orchestra sopra due motive russe (1834; "Symphony for Orchestra on Two Russian Motifs"). Recalled to Russia by his father's death, he married and settled down to the composition of the opera that first won him fame
