Having to earn his own money he worked as a part-time musician and finished his studies in Milan where he wrote his first Italian style opera. Impressing the audience he was invited to London where he had first contact with the music of George Frideric Handel See full bio

He is also remembered as the music teacher of Marie-Antoinette who as Queen of France promoted Gluck and was his patron. Some regard him as the father of the Rococo and Classical age of music—at least in Opera. Gluck's operatic reforms, eliminating all that was undramatic, were a turning point in the history of the medium. Gluck lived during a time of political and social volatility with the advent of the French and American revolutions as well as the Napoleonic wars. He was most affected by these massive historical changes and featured the dramatic in his operas as a way of speaking to the populace about human responsibility and personal and moral transformations. Gluck would have agreed with the values as stated in the Universal Peace Federation which affirm taking responsibility for one's own personal, spiritual and moral transformation. (See: Core Values and Principles, The Universal Peace Federation).

Early years
Gluck was born in Erasbach (now a district of Berching, Bavaria) the first of nine children. His father came from a long line of foresters; nothing is known about Gluck's mother, neither her ancestry nor her maiden name. In 1717, the family moved to Bohemia, where the father became head forester in the service of Prince Philipp Hyazinth von Lobkowitz in 1727. Little is known about Gluck's early years or his

Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Founder Len Mullenger GLUCK, Christoph Willibald b Erasbach, Bavaria, 2 July 1714 d Vienna, 15 November 1787, aged seventy-three He was the son of a huntsman. It is believed that from 1724 to 1728 he was at a Jesuit school and that he entered Prague University in 1732. From then until 1736 he earned a living by teaching and by performing on violin, cello and keyboard instruments, and as assistant church organist. In 1736 he became chamber musician in the household of Prince Lobkowitz in Vienna. From 1737 to 1740 he studied music in Milan. By 1745 his operas were so successful that he was invited to London, where he met Arne and Handel. He returned to Vienna in 1749, and married a wealthy wife there in 1750. For a year or two he travelled widely, and in 1754 he was made musical director to the court of Francis I in Vienna, retiring from that post in 1764. He continued to work both in Vienna and Paris, but in 1781 he had a stroke which limited his activities in his remaining years.
