One of the most distinguished French musicians and composers of the nineteenth century, b. in Paris , on 17 June, 1818; d. there, 17 October, 1893. His father, a painter and architect of some distinction and a man of high character and sensitive nature , died when Charles was still in his childhood, and his education devolved upon his mother, a gifted pianist, who used her talents to provide for her two sons, Charles and Urbain Saint-Louis , where he was one of the best scholars. His musical gifts , strikingly apparent from his earliest childhood, were carefully developed by his mother. He received his first great musical impression at the age of thirteen, when his mother took him to hear Rossini's opera "Otello", the principal roles of which were presented by Malibran , Rubini, Lablache , and Tamburini , four of the greatest singers the world has ever heard. That same year he witnessed a performance of Mozart's "Don Juan" and was raised by it to a high pitch of enthusiasm. In fact Mozart remained Gounod's ideal throughout his career. CHARLES-FRANCOIS GOUNOD
Gounod had a particularly strong influence on French composers from the middle of the 19th century. He was educated at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1837. His return to Paris in 1843, after developing a wide knowledge of earlier and contemporary music abroad, brought a position as an organist. He achieved considerable success in the theatre, particularly with the opera Faust in 1859, but the Franco- Prussian War of 1870 and a period spent in England, brought a largely unprofitable interruption. His influence on English vocal music, however, was perceptible and not always for the best. Operas Church Music Orchestral Music Gounod wrote two symphonies, but it is his Petite symphonie of 1885, for ten wind instruments, that has proved more attractive. His energetic Saltarello, an Italian dance akin to the Tarantella, was seemingly written in 1865. Gounod's Faust
Charles Gounod, drawing by Ingres Faust Faust Act I. Faust's study. The aged philosopher-magician, completely disillusioned, is ready for death. He is about to drink poison and is temporarily distracted by offstage choruses of girls and men estolling life and love and God. Faust utters curses and calls for Satan's help.
"Me voici" [Here I am]
comes the answer. The demon describes his costume, which includes a sword, a plumed hat, and a rich cloak. Act II. A fair at a city marketplace. The student Wagner sings a short solo in praise of drink; the soldiers, old men, girls and youths join in. Valentin enters, looking at an amulet given to him by his sister Marguerite to keep him from harm in the war he is about to fight in. Valentin is worried about leaving Marguerite alone, but the love-smitten youth Siébel promises to look after her. Valentin sings the aria "Avant de quitter ces lieux" [Before leaving this place], then Wagner leads the crowd in "The Song of the Rat." But a stranger interrupts.
