18TH CENTURY ENGLISH MUSIC Home Page Links Email Maurice Greene (1696-1755) Early Years
Maurice Greene was born in London on 12th August 1696. His Grandfather, John Greene (1616-1659), had been the Recorder in the City of London and his father, Thomas Greene (1648-1720), had been chaplain of the Chapel Royal and canon of Salisbury. Maurice Greene was the youngest of seven children and began his musical studies with Jeremiah Clarke and Charles King as a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral. At the age of 14 his voice broke and his musical tutoring was continued under Richard Brind, the Cathedral organist.
In March 1714 at the age of 17 he began his first musical post as organist at St. Dunstan-in-the-West, Fleet Street.
In 1717 upon the death of Daniel Purcell (brother of Henry) the situation of organist of St. Andrews, Holborn became vacant. Greene applied for the post together with seven other organists including Henry Purcell's only son Edward. On 17th February 1718 the 'Housekeepers of the Parish' voted unanimously to appoint Greene as organist at a salary of £50 per annum. In the same year Richard Brind died and Greene superseded him as organist at St. Paul's Cathedral. In this post he was responsible for the music at the Cathedral services and also at the annual Sons of the Clergy festival. For this latter event he composed many of his orchestral anthems.
About this time Greene married Mary Dillingham (1699-1767) who was a cousin of the composer Jeremiah Clarke (1673-1707). Miss Dillingham and her sister kept a milliner's shop in Paternoster Row, just around the corner from St. Paul's Cathedral. The first of the Greene's five children was born in the year following their marriage.

edit Biography
Born in London , the son of a clergyman, Greene became a choirboy at St Paul's Cathedral under Jeremiah Clarke and Charles King . He studied the organ under Richard Brind , and after Brind died, Greene became organist at St Paul's. With the death of William Croft in 1727, Greene became organist at the Chapel Royal , and in 1730 he became professor of music at Cambridge University . In 1735 he was appointed Master of the King's Musick . At his death, Greene was working on the compilation Cathedral Music , which his student and successor as Master of the King's Musick, William Boyce , was to complete. Many items from that collection are still used in Anglican services today. He wrote very competent music in the Georgian style, particularly long Verse Anthems. However his acknowledged masterpiece, 'Lord, let me know mine end', is a Full Anthem. Greene sets a text full of pathos using a polyphonic texture over a continuous instrumental walking bass, with a particularly effective Treble duet in the middle of the work. Both this section and the end of the anthem contain superb examples of the Neapolitan Sixth chord.

Greene wrote a good deal of both sacred and secular vocal music, including:

  • Boldon on rumored split with Greene Thank God it's Monday It's a beautiful day out here We're not behind no desk We're not fightin' no traffic We're out here workin' With the ability God gave us So let's have a great practice. Greene is neither poet nor rapper. But know this: His words flow straight from the soul of the world's fastest man. Desk? Traffic? Been there and worse. "I've had bad jobs," says Greene. "Now I have a good one. I'm thankful." Now it's evening, after the sermon and the spirited workout that followed. Greene is hunched over the dining room table in his five-bedroom home in Granada Hills, north of Los Angeles. One of Greene's houseguests is watching a movie on the 120-inch projection television, replete with plaster-peeling DVD system. Greene loves to watch loud movies, like Top Gun and Scarface. Fast ones, too. "I've watched Ben on that screen," says Greene, nodding. "I've watched him lots of times."
