Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
Franz Joseph Haydn is a cornerstone of the Classical Period of music. He came at a time when the influence of the church on musical development was diminishing and this influence was moving towards the nobility who employed composers to provide entertainment for their guests. In Haydn's case his employment by one family was a happy and rewarding one, which gave him a lot of freedom to explore many different aspects of music. This experimentation and the experience gained allowed Haydn to play a crucial role in establishing many of the key classical forms such as the Symphony, the String Quartet, the Sonata and the Concerto. Although versions of all these forms already existed, Haydn was the principle composer to establish and promote them. A key component of all these forms is something called "Sonata Form" which was normally used for the first (and sometimes later) movements of a works. Haydn's key role in classical music, his reputation across Europe, and the wealth of music he created over the years, earned him the knickname "Papa Haydn". Haydn rarely travelled far from the Esterhazy properties although he did meet and form a mutually rewarding relationship with Mozart on a visit to Vienna. Haydn outlived several heads of the Esterhazy family and one change in leadership gave him the opportunity to travel further afield and he was to visit parts of Europe and especially London where he discovered the works of Handel. He made another fruitful visit to London later, where he composed and conducted a number of new symphonies. A sign of Haydn's fame in later life and the political times in which he lived, is that the invading Napolean put a guard around Haydn's house as the composer lay ill. No doubt the composer would have approved when Mozart's Requiem was later played at his funeral.

27. Franz Joseph Haydn
Brief biography from ThinkQuest.
http://library.thinkquest.org/5399/hayrep.htm
Franz Joseph Haydn Music is a never ending series of song. Music stays with you forever. Franz Joseph Haydn first saw light in Roharu, Austria in 1732. He was the son of a wheelwright who played harp and sang in his spare time. Joseph was known to have a wonderful singing voice. He was sent to Hamburg for school where he learned how to play the clavier, and the violin. George Reutal, a choirmaster at St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna, noticed his great singing. There he learned many more musical elements and a general education.
When his voice changed in 1749 he was dismissed. In 1760 he married Maria Ann Keller. The marriage was an unhappy one. His first great symphonies were written in about 1762 they were: Symphonies No. 6,7, and 8. By the 1770's Haydn had become a known figure in the musical world. He visited royalty and other high-class people.
In 1781 Haydn met Mozart and called him "the greatest composer known to me either in person or reputation." In London, he performed concerts for the Prince of Wales. He also received an honors doctorate from Oxford. In 1792 he gave Beethoven composition lessons. Because of their differences of personality they did not get along. Haydn said later that Beethoven was very talented. His health deteriorated and died in 1809.
Haydn during his whole life and after life has been under the shadow of younger composers in that period of time. His music will be heard forever just as the record of music takes another turn.

Music History 102:
The Classical or Viennese Period
The Rococo
The contrapuntal practices of the German Baroque began to give way in the first half of the eighteenth century to a highly ornamented style of melodic instrumental music, especially in France. This style has come to be called Rococo , after the same movement in the visual arts. The paintings of Boucher, Fragonard, and Watteau are prime examples of the visual style of the time. This refined but ornamented style could already be heard in the music of French composers Couperin and Rameau , and pervades the music of Italian composer Giovanni Pergolesi (1710-1736) . It is evident as well in the music of the two sons of Johann Sebastian Bach Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) and Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) concertos had a profound influence on the eight year old Mozart sonatas came to influence the piano sonatas of later composers Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven . Each of these masters made the Austrian city of Vienna their home, thus equating the Classical style with the Viennese style.
