Jump to: navigation search Haydn, Franz Joseph (1732-1809): Austrian Composer. Born to parents of modest means and little musical interest in lower Austria, young Joseph was initially sent to school to train for the priesthood. But his natural musical talents combined with a delicate voice soon attracted attention, and he was recruited to join the famed choir at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. There he received instruction in voice, violin and keyboard. When his voice finally broke and Haydn was dismissed from the choir at age 16, he remained in Vienna and earned a precarious living as a free-lance musician. During this period, he undertook self-study in composition, reading major theory treatises, and eventually receiving tutelage from Nicola Porpora, one of the most renowned composers of Italian opera then living in Vienna. By 1753, Haydn began earning commissions, and we have the first extant compositions from his pen. Haydn’s talent as a composer along with his generally cheery disposition soon earned him a number of patrons and students. In the genre of the keyboard sonata, he was able to make his first original mark as a composer, extending brilliantly the Italian models then in vogue. Around this time, he also began experimenting with the new genres of the string quartet and symphony, almost immediately adding his own distinct stamp upon them. His fascination with these three genres of music continued until the end of his life; together, his 58 keyboard sonatas, 90 odd string quartets, and 107 symphonies constitute the epitome of the Viennese classical style, and the touchstone upon which Mozart and

FRANZ JOSEF HAYDN Franz Josef Haydn was born on 31 March 1732, in Rohrau, a village in Austria near the border of Hungary. He came from peasant folk. His father, Mathias Haydn, was a wagoner and parish sexton; his mother, Elizabeth, was a woman of simple tastes and humble origin.
Music was an instinct with these people. During the evening Mathias would play the harp, and Elizabeth would sing, as the children sat at their feet and listened. Of these younger Haydns, Franz Josef was most keenly affected by the music he heard, and most clearly showed aptitude for the art. When his father discovered him one day, sitting outside the schoolhouse and simulating playing the violin by scraping two sticks of wood against each other, he determined to give the boy as competent a musical training as he could. For this purpose, he enlisted the cooperation of his kinsman, Johann Mathias Frankh, a choir-master, who was the teach the boy of six the violin and harpsichord. Haydn later commented that he received "more blows than victuals" from his teacher, but Frankh was a competent teacher, and in two years the boy was able to enter the choir school of St. Stephen`s church in Vienna.
At St. Stephen`s, Haydn was under the tutelage of Reutter, the chapel-master, who failed to discern any particular talent in the boy. Reutter not only neglected Haydn but frequently maltreated him. Josef Haydn, however, found musical guidance elsewhere. With a few gulden, which he had succeeded in saving, he bought several treatises on counterpoint and thorough bass, which he eventually learned by rote. Thus he acquired training in musical theory.

    Biography
Austrian composer, a child prodigy and prolific composer. The bulk of his work from 1777-1790 included 125 symphonies and overtures, 76 quartets, 68 trios, 54 sonatas, 31 concertos, 24 operas, 14 masses, 22 arias and more. One of 12 kids, he was raised in poverty. At five he began his musical education; eight years later he composed a Mass. In 1758 he reached a turning point, and he went from being a struggling musician to one who was recognized. Appointed as music director to Count Morzin in 1759, he then became Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy, 1761-1790, that continued through three generations of royalty. Haydn's friendship with Mozart, 24 years older, began in 1781; he nonetheless outlived Mozart by 18 years. Their friendship was a deep one, with each one learning from the other. Mozart dedicated six string quartets to Haydn and Haydn's music increased in richness and warmth due to the friendship. During his last years Haydn received honors and acclaim from governments and institutions throughout Europe, leaving him famous and wealthy. He is considered the chief founder of the Viennese classical school.

    FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
Born: March 31, 1732. Rohrao, Austria
Died: May 31, 1809. Vienna, Austria
    In his own words...

"My Prince was always satisfied with my works. I not only had the encouragement of constant approval but as conductor of an orchestra I could make experiments, observe what produced an effect and what weakened it, and... improve, alter, make additions, or omissions, and be as bold as I pleased." Austrian composer. Part of the so-called Viennese School, and an important influence on both Mozart and Beethoven.
Our image of the composer as an "artist," concerned with doing only what he or she wants to, is rooted in the nineteenth century. Composers of previous periods did not often have that luxury, but Franz Joseph Haydn did. Most of his creative life was spent in the service of the Esterházy family, writing pieces for their needs and desires. For example, he composed over 125 trios for the baryton an instrument something like a viola da gamba simply because it was the instrument that Prince Nikolaus played.
Surprisingly, these seeming restrictions, compounded by his frequent sojourns to the Esterházy summer palace at Esterháza (far removed from the musical center of Vienna) did little to dampen Haydn's creativity. Instead, he stated that this isolation and his ability to work daily with the musicians he was writing for was a perfect situation. Nor did it diminish his fame. By the 1780s, his music had been published all over Europe, and he was well-regarded in the music world. Because of this, he was invited to various cities and commissioned to write musical pieces for premieres in those cities. Most notable are the six symphonies he wrote for the Concerts Spirituels in Paris (Nos.82-87, called his "Paris" symphonies) and the twelve he wrote for the concert promoter Johann Peter Salomon in London (Nos.93-104, called the "London" symphonies). His final works, mostly sacred music for his patron, culminated in two large oratorios
