BIOGRAPHIE Johann David Heinichen (17. April 1683 - 16. Johann David Heinichen 1683-1729
Student at the St. Thomas School under Bach's predecessor, Kuhnau , and later teacher of Graupner , Heinichen continued in Leipzig to study law at the university there. In 1710 he visited Italy, where, in 1711, he produced an important book on the thoroughbass that was later revised as Der Generalbass in der Composition (1728). After six years in Italy, Heinichen worked briefly for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen (1717, the same year that Bach began his appointment in the same court). Heinichen soon became Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland in Dresden. Although he composed more than 150 sacred choral works, Heinichen is remembered today mainly for his contributions to music theory.

Johann David Heinichen
Introduction To suggest that Johann David Heinichen's music and theoretical writings have been under-explored would be an understatement. Heinichen and his music has surely suffered the same fate as many of his contemporaries in being overshadowed by the 19 th century preoccupation with Johann Sebastian Bach gusto that belies the large amount of research and deep insight needed to bring these works to our attention. With respect to modern printed editions of Heinichen's music Max Sobel of Concerto Editions and Michael Walter in particular are continuing this work. Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) According to a sleeve note (BIS LP-8 "Clas Perhrsson"), Johann David Heinichen was called Germany's Jean-Philippe Rameau by his contemporaries. As gleaned from Internet sources, Heinichen was a German composer who received his education at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, where Johann Sebastian Bach was later to teach, serving as assistant to the then cantor, Kuhnau, and proceeding thereafter to the University of Leipzig. After an initial career as a lawyer inWeissenfels, Heinichen returned to musical activity in Leipzig, followed by a period of work and study in Italy. In 1717 he was appointed Court Kapellmeister in Dresden, a position he retained until his death in 1729.
Heinichen wrote operas in the earlier part of his career and moved to Italy with the express purpose of studying the art of Italian opera at its source. In addition to opera, his works include instrumental music, serenades, pieces for voices and instruments as well as church music.
