Hindemith helped to create a new conception of tonality with the 12-tone scale while retaining the traditional anchor of a tonic or foundational tone. His works and teachings in the United States made him very popular, especially in the 1940s when he used consonance and dissonance to set apart the melodic and harmonic lines of a composition for emphasis and expression.

Biography
Born in Hanau, Germany, Hindemith was taught the violin as a child. He entered the Hochsche Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main where he studied conducting, composition, and violin under Arnold Mendelssohn and Bernhard Sekles, supporting himself by playing in dance bands and musical-comedy groups. He led the Frankfurt Opera orchestra from 1915 to 1923 and played in the Rebner string quartet in 1921 in which he played second violin, and later the viola. In 1929 he founded the Amar Quartet, playing the viola, and toured Europe extensively. In 1922, some of his pieces were heard at the International Society for Contemporary Music festival in Salzburg, which first brought him to the attention of an international audience. The following year, he began to work as an organizer of the Donaueschingen Festival, where his programs featured works by several avant garde composers including

Hindemith, Paul
(b. Nov . 16, 1895, Hanau, near Frankfurt am Maind. Dec. 28, 1963, Frankfurt am Main), one of the principal German composers of the first half of the 20th century and a leading musical theorist. He sought to revitalize tonality, the system underlying Western music for three centuries, which had begun to disintegrate, and also pioneered in the writing of Gebrauchsmusik , or "utility music," compositions for workaday occasions. He regarded the composer as a craftsman (turning out music to meet social needs) rather than as an artist (composing to satisfy his own soul). As a teacher of composition he probably exerted an influence on most of the composers of the generation that followed him. Hindemith earned his living at an early age playing the violin in cafes, dance bands, and theatres. His undertaking of almost any kind of musical job may have contributed to the facility and matter-of-factness with which he later composed. Studying music in Frankfurt, at 20 he became leader of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra. Meanwhile, his own compositions were being heard at international festivals of contemporary music. Early works included chamber music composed for the Amar-Hindemith Quartet, in which he played the viola; the song cycles

Many of Hindemith's works might be classed as Gebrauchsmusik [utility music], written for specific performance by amateur school groups or chamber music organizations. His aim was to establish closer contact between composer and public. Included in this group are the children's opera Wir bauen eine Stadt [we are building a city] (1931) and numerous sonatas and chamber works. Introduction
Hindemith loved the viola . Being a viola virtuoso himself, Hindemith composed very many viola sonatas as well as a viola concerto. His music has spoken to the world for many years now. He was as talented a conductor as a composer.
Historical Context
Paul Hindemith was born near Frankfurt. He studied at the Frankfurt Conservatory, where he proved that he was a talented violinsit, violist, pianist and clarinetist. At the age of nineteen he became the conductor of the Frankfurt Opera. He was also part of the Rebner String Quartet. Hindemith's first compositions drew spectacular attention. The overly-sexual operas such as Murder, and Sancta Susanna drew uncertain reviews. In 1922 he composed Kammermusik #1 which was a effort at Baroque style. It would be his first of many to come. In 1923, he gave up his position as the conductor of the Frankfurt Opera. He decided to focus on his music and moved toward a style of distinguished energy and and objectivity. His opera, Cardillac, deals with a goldsmith who murders his customers, but the horrific descriptions are covered by the clear structure of music and its undying beauty. In the 1930's he began work on his famous opera, Mathis der Maler and the symphony based on the opera. The painter portrayed in this piece symbolized the dilemma for artists caught up in political upheavals. The three movements show Hindemith's coming to terms with his
