Holst, Gustav
His biography, which was affected by few external events, offers rich and varied comment on supposedly peripheral phenomena of the time. Holst led a musician's double life; the son of a musical family, born on September 21, 1874 in Cheltenham, he studied at the Royal College of Music and then went on to teach music at various schools and institutes in London. He was only able to compose during his free time and as a result, his oeuvre is not extensive.

Gustav Holst
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search A ca.1921 photograph of Holst, taken by Herbert Lambert. Gustav Theodore Holst (born Gustavus Theodor von Holst The Planets Having studied at the Royal College of Music in London, his early work was influenced by Grieg Wagner Richard Strauss and fellow student Ralph Vaughan Williams and later, through Vaughan Williams, the music of Ravel The combined influence of Ravel, Hindu spiritualism and English folk tunes enabled Holst to free himself of the influence of Wagner and Strauss and to forge his own style. Holst's music is well known for unconventional use of metre and haunting melodies. Holst composed almost 200 works, including operas ballets choral hymns and songs (see Selected works below). An enthusiastic educator, Holst became music master at St Paul's Girls' School in 1905 and director of music at Morley College in 1907, continuing in both posts until retirement. He was the brother of Hollywood actor Ernest Cossart and father of the composer and conductor Imogen Holst , who wrote a biography of him in 1938.

Imogen Holst (1907-1984), the only child of Gustav Holst, was a composer and arranger of folksongs, writer on music, conductor, and administrator. She also acted as music assistant to Benjamin Britten, of whom she became a friend and close associate. She subsequently continued as Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival until 1977, when she retired to devote more time to preparing a thematic catalogue of her father's music. Holst, Gustav (Theodore),
original name GUSTAVUS THEODORE VON HOLST (b. Sept. 21, 1874, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Eng.d. May 25, 1934, London), English composer and music teacher noted for the excellence of his orchestration. His music combines an international flavour based on the styles of Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, and others with a continuation of English Romanticism. The son of a Swedish father and English mother, Holst studied at the Royal College of Music in London. His solo instrument was the trombone, and for some years after leaving the college he made his living as a trombone player in the Carl Rosa Opera Company and in various orchestras. He became music master at St. Paul's Girls' School in 1905 and director of music at Morley College in 1907. These were the most important of his teaching posts, and he retained both of them until the end of his life. Holst's pioneering methods, which entailed a rediscovery of the English vocal and choral tradition (folk song, madrigals, and church music), were influential in musical education in many English schools. Many of Holst's smaller choral works, folk-song arrangements, and instrumental pieces ( e.g
