Introduction Cantatas Other Vocal Instrumental ... Z Gustav Holst (Composer, Arranger) Born: September 21, 1874 - Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England
Died: May 25, 1934 - London, England Gustav(us Theodore von) Holst was a significant English composer, mostly known for his orchestral suite The Planets Early Life Gustav Holst, was born to a family of Swedish extraction (by way of Latvia and Russia). The house was opened as a museum of Holst's life and times in 1974. He was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School for Boys. Holst's grandfather, Gustavus von Holst of Riga, Latvia, a composer of elegant harp music, moved to England, becoming a notable harp teacher. Holst's father Adolph von Holst, an organist, pianist and choirmaster, gave both piano lessons and recitals; and his mother, Clara von Holst, who died when Gustav was eight, was a singer. As a frail child whose early recollections were musical, Holst had been taught to play piano and violin, and began composing when he was about 12.Holst's father was the organist at All Saints' Church in Pittville, and his childhood home is now a small museum, devoted partly to him and partly to illustrating local domestic life of the mid-19 th century. Holst grew up in the world of Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Conan Doyle, Gauguin, Monet, Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Puccini. Both he and his sister learned piano from an early age, but Holst, stricken with a nerve condition that affected the movement of his right hand in adolescence, gave up the piano for the trombone, which was less painful to play.

Gustav Holst - The Planets

Colin Matthews - Pluto
(The Halle Orchestra, Mark Elder)
One of the finest pieces of classical music composed.
Ever. Super Audio CD rip. The Planets Gustav Holst, London Symphony Orchestra, 1924 Naturally the sound is atrocious, but it's still interesting to hear Holst himself conducting his most popular work. Here is Holst's brilliant a capella chamber opera Savitri .  A bit of an about-face from the late Romantic bombast of The Planets , but his best work, in my opinion.  This short opera relates a vignette from the great Vedic epic Mahabharata , and deals with illusion, overcoming and the fear of death. Performers: Savitri - Felicity Palmer (mezzo soprano) Satyavan - Philip Langridge (tenor) Death - Stephen Varcoe (bass) Chorus - The Richard Hickox Singers Gustav Holst - Savitri Gustav Holst - This Have I Done For My True Love Quote During the early 1900s the rediscovery of English folksong by such collectors as Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Percy Grainger helped Holst to simplify his style and rid himself of the heavy legacy of the nineteenth century. He became interested in modal scales and flexible metres, which he realized were more appropriate to settings of the English language than the diatonic system and regular rhythms of the Germanic tradition. Vaughan Williams was also working on the music for the new English Hymnal during this period, and besides contributing some of the tunes himself Holst was intrigued by the simple beauty of the plainsong melodies which were included in the collection. These influences began to have an effect on his own music, especially when allied to medieval words, as is evident in such pieces as Jesu, Thou the Virgin-born (No 3 of the Four Old English Carols of 1907) and A Welcome Song (of similar date) with accompaniment for oboe and cello.

Gustav Holst, b. Sept. 21, 1874, d. May 25, 1934, was one of the leading English composers of the early 20th century. The son of a music teacher, Holst studied composition with Sir Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music (where he later taught from 1919 to 1924) and began his career as a church organist, trombonist, and choral director. Keenly interested in Eastern philosophy and music, he learned Sanskrit and set to music parts of the Hindu scriptures in his own translations. Other influences were his colleague and friend Ralph Vaughan Williams and the folklorist Cecil Sharp, both of whom interested him in English folk song.
