Born Oscar-Arthur Honegger (the first name was never used) in Le Havre, France , he initially studied harmony and violin in Paris , and after a brief period in Zürich , returned there to study with Charles-Marie Widor and Vincent d'Indy . He continued to study through the 1910s, before writing the ballet Le dit des jeux du monde in 1918, generally considered to be his first characteristic work. In 1926 he married Andrée Vaurabourg , a pianist and fellow student at the Paris Conservatoire , on the condition that they live in separate apartments. They lived apart for the duration of their marriage, with the exceptions of an attempt at living together in 1935, which lasted less than a year, and the last year of Honegger's life, when he could no longer live alone. They had one daughter, Pascale, born in 1932. Honegger also had a son, Jean-Claude (1926–2003), with the singer Claire Croiza In the early 1920s Honegger shot to fame with his "dramatic psalm" Le Roi David ("King David"), which is still in the choral repertoire. Arthur Honegger
In the 1920s, Honegger became part of the French group Les Six. Along with Poulenc and Milhaud, he is still treated seriously. Jazz and Le Sacre du printemps also get brought into this mix. Honegger developed slowly: many years passed before he found his mature style. Accordingly, we have a Ravel-like Prelude to "Aglavaine et Selysette" , the Stravinskian Mouvements symphoniques (including Pacific 231 and Rugby ), the jazzy cello concerto, and the flip piano concertino. We see this eclecticism all at one go in the oratorio Le Roi David (1921), still one of his most popular works. Here Bach rubs shoulders with Stravinsky, Ravel, and even Massenet. It took Honegger some time to assimilate these strands. Les Six were never all that close artistically and soon broke up into individual careers, although Honegger remained friendly with Poulenc and Milhaud. In particular, Honegger rejected Satie and strove after high seriousness in a way alien to the rest of the group. Where others were epigrammatic, favoring the short, direct, jewel-like statement, he was expansive. He began a long association with Paul Claudel and got caught up in the twentieth-century Christian revival in France. This culminates in his masterpiece

10. Arthur Honegger Was A Composer Born In Le Havre On March 10, 1892
Brief biography with analysis of the cantata.
http://www.easternx.com/honegger.htm
The Library Resource Page for this project Arthur Honegger A) Arthur Honegger was a composer born in Le Havre on March 10, 1892. While still at a young age, he was sent to the Zurich Conservatory by his father. While at the conservatory he studied violin, conducting, and harmony under Freidrich Hegan, who was, among his many talents, a very distinguished musician. With Honegger under his instruction, Hegan immediately recognized the massive potential of the young man. After spending a few years in Switzerland from1914-1915, Honegger began the composition of his final series of orchestral works. Along with being a noted lecturer, conductor, and accompanist, he was also a member of Les Six which was a group of composers who were against Romantic music. Three years before his death in 1955, Honegger finished The Christmas Cantata in 1952. C) Neo-classicism is a 20 th century style of composing brought by the reintroduction of balanced forms and clearly perceived thematic processes of earlier styles to replace the over-exaggerated gesticulation and absence of form of the late Romanticism. A neo-classicist is prone to reject the structural tonal system found in true classical music and instead use expanded tonality, modality, or atonality. Just the term "neo" itself implies a deviation from the traits of true classical music. The whole idea of neo-classicism was a direct result of anti-romanticism in an attempt to refine and control expressionism. Neo-Classicism is less known for its reinstitution of the technique of composers like Mozart and Haydn, but known more-so for its power in the manipulation of previous elements. The three schools of neo-classicism are those of Stravinsky, Shoenberg, and Hindemith.

Arthur Honegger
When Honegger was nineteen, he finished his conservatory studies and moved to Paris. He met some other composers there. Six of the composers, including Honegger, became good friends. They had some of the same ideas about how music should sound. Everyone called the group Les Six, or "The Six." The six composers wrote some music together, including a ballet. Before long, though, the friends started moving in different directions with their musical ideas. Honegger began writing longer, more serious pieces than his friends.
Pacific 231, which he wrote in 1923. It describes a train—a steam locomotive, to be exact. Honegger called this kind of music " machine music ." There is a recording of this work in the Teacher’s Edition of Grade 2, p. 276.
Besides Pacific 231, Honegger was well known for writing music for 43 movies. In 1927, when movies were still "silent," he wrote the music for Napoleon.
