Arthur Honegger
In the 1920s, Honegger became part of the French group Les Six. Along with Poulenc and Milhaud, he is still treated seriously. Jazz and Le Sacre du printemps also get brought into this mix. Honegger developed slowly: many years passed before he found his mature style. Accordingly, we have a Ravel-like Prelude to "Aglavaine et Selysette" , the Stravinskian Mouvements symphoniques (including Pacific 231 and Rugby ), the jazzy cello concerto, and the flip piano concertino. We see this eclecticism all at one go in the oratorio Le Roi David (1921), still one of his most popular works. Here Bach rubs shoulders with Stravinsky, Ravel, and even Massenet. It took Honegger some time to assimilate these strands. Les Six were never all that close artistically and soon broke up into individual careers, although Honegger remained friendly with Poulenc and Milhaud. In particular, Honegger rejected Satie and strove after high seriousness in a way alien to the rest of the group. Where others were epigrammatic, favoring the short, direct, jewel-like statement, he was expansive. He began a long association with Paul Claudel and got caught up in the twentieth-century Christian revival in France. This culminates in his masterpiece

Biography
French composer who developed a precise style, and during the 1920s became one of "The Six," a group of French composers who rejected romanticism and impressionism. Creating a sensation in 1923 with his tone poem "Pacific 231," he was also famous for his oratorio "Jeanne Au Bucher," 1935. His compositions consisted of five symphonies, ballet music, chamber, orchestral and stage music, along with motion picture and radio dramas. Though associated with modern movement in French music, Honegger was more German in his musical approach. He is an author of an autobiography. Honegger married pianist Andree Vaurabourg in 1926. He died on 11/27/1955, Paris, France. Link to Wikipedia biography

Le Roi David (1921; "The King David"). Two successful orchestral works followed: Pacific 231 (1924), an impression of a locomotive in action, and Rugby (1928), which reflected the composer's love of speed and virile sports. Also from this period was the (1921; "Summer Pastoral") for chamber orchestra. Muchbut not allof his music from the 1920s is rhythmic, dissonant, and austere and shows great freedom in the treatment of tonality. Polytonality sometimes occurs. With his dramatic oratorios ("Joan of Arc at the Stake") and La Danse des morts ("The Dance of the Dead"), both on texts by Paul Claudel, he turned toward the mysticism and religious meaning that underlie many of his later works. Honegger was a prolific composer and made notable contributions to opera ( Judith
