Josquin Desprez - Definition
Josquin Des Prez Josquin Des Prez (diminutive of "Joseph"; latinized Josquinus Pratensis) (c. August 27 ) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance . He was the most famous European composer between Guillaume Dufay and Palestrina , and is usually considered to be the central figure of the Netherlands style.
Life
Little is known of his early life, but he was probably born either in Hainaut Belgium , or immediately across the border in France , since several times in his life he was classified legally as a Frenchman (for instance, when he made his will). Josquin was long mistaken for a man with a similar name who sang in Milan from to , and his birthdate was long considered to be around : more recent scholarship has shown that he was born around , and did not go to Italy until the early . According to 17th century records, he became a choir boy in the collegiate church of Saint-Quentin at an early age, probably around , and may have studied counterpoint under Ockeghem , whom he greatly admired throughout his life (on Ockeghem's death in he wrote the impressive motet La Déploration sur la mort Ockeghem ). Biography
1611 woodcut of Josquin. This is generally thought to have been copied from an original oil painting, which is now lost. Josquin's early life is something of a mystery; it is conjectured that he was a native of the Vermandois region of Picardy , but it is certain that he was a singer at Milan Cathedral in 1459, remaining there until December 1472. By July 1474 he was one of the 'cantori di capella' in the chapel of Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Between 1476 and 1504 he passed into the service of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, whom he probably accompanied in Rome in 1484. His name first appears among the papal chapel choir in 1486 and recurs sporadically; he had left the choir by 1501. In this Italian period Josquin reached artistic maturity. Josquin then went to France , probably serving in Louis XII 's court. Although he may have had connections with the Ferrara court (through the Sforzas) in the 1480s and 1490s, no formal relationship with the court is known before 1503 when, for a year, he was maestro di cappella there and the highest-paid singer in the chapel's history. There he probably wrote primarily masses and motets. An outbreak of plague in 1503 forced the court to leave Ferrara (Josquin's place was taken by

COMPOSERS
JOSQUIN DESPREZ
Born: c.1440
French/Franco-Flemish composer. Generally acknowledged as the greatest composer of the High Renaissance.

Martin Luther, who had a good knowledge of music, said of Josquin Desprez, "he alone is the master of the notes, they have to do as he bids them." Indeed, Josquin was acknowledged by nearly all his contemporaries as the greatest composer of his time. If so, he stands as the first among many great musicians, for the composers of what we often term the Netherlands School created one of the richest periods in Western musical history. His contemporaries including Antoine Brumel (c.1460-c.1515), Pierre de la Rue (c.1460-1518) and Loyset Compère (c.1445-1518) and the previous generation led by Johannes Ockeghem (c.1410-1497) created a style of music that can rightly be compared to the art of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
What we do know is just what Josquin's contemporaries knew: that he created wonderful music. What stands out most in this music is his care for the words. This is seen in part by the way he uses imitation to allow each voice to present the text before the texture becomes too dense to be clear. He also made use of homophonic textures to give the text an added clarity. Some of his works, especially his Masses, use the older cantus firmus technique. Here he uses the borrowed melody to create a huge scaffolding upon which he constructs the other melodies. Some of these pieces display a high level of technical complexity. At the same time, he could create pieces of marvelous simplicity and elegance, as he did so often in his motets and chansons.

(c.1440 - 1521) Josquin's masses include not only cantus firmus masses, such as the widely reknowned "Missa Pange Lingua," but also "parody" masses in which entire contrapuntal complexes are borrowed from an earlier source. His secular compositions are highly varied, from light songs called "frottola," to weightier french chansons such as the widely parodied "Milles Regretz," to the motet-chanson "Deploration on the death of Ockeghem /Nimphes des bois" and its gloomy textures. However, Josquin's motets contain some of his most varied and highly respected output, and it is here that his combination of piety, technical mastery, and individual discretion makes its surest showing. The motet "Ave Maria, gratia plena" is an especially crystalized example of his style, with its strict canonic opening and subsequent structural interplay. The massive motet "Miserere mei, Deus" shows Josquin at his most expressive and expansive, while the late motet "De profundis clamavi" shows him at his most serene. In all these settings, Josquin's primary concern is with the direct expression of text, and it is this humanistic quality that set the stage for the main portion of Renaissance and Baroque music.
