From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Erich Wolfgang Korngold Erich Wolfgang Korngold (May 29, 1897 – November 29, 1957) was an Austro-Hungarian film and romantic music composer While his compositional style was considered well out of vogue at the time he died, his music has more recently undergone a reevaluation and a gradual reawakening of interest. Along with such composers as Max Steiner and Alfred Newman , he is considered one of the founders of film music. Korngold won the Academy Award for his score to The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938, widely considered one of the greatest scores ever written. His score to Anthony Adverse (1936) also won the Oscar; however, at this time, composers were not eligible to be nominated in the Original Score category. His score to Robin Hood was ranked by the American Film Institute as the eleventh greatest American film score of all time.

ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD
Son of an eminent music critic in Vienna, Korngold showed great precocity and impressed even Mahler Korngold won success in 1916 with his operas Violanta and The Ring of Polycrates . Still more successful was the opera Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) staged on the same evening in Hamburg and Cologne in 1920. The work is a dream-story, suggesting the work of Maeterlinck or Edgar Allan Poe, haunted by ideas of death. The opera was internationally successful and has recently been revived. Equally precocious in other genres of music, Korngold wrote his first piano sonata at the age of twelve, adding a second soon after, with a third in 1930. The greater part of his chamber music was written before he left Germany. The middle period of his life, in America, established him as a respected composer of film music. The music that he wrote for the cinema, following his practice for the composition of opera, has a distinction of its own, apart from the films for which it was written, and on occasions provided him with material for later use in another context. His music for The Adventures of Robin Hood and for Anthony Adverse won Oscars, and the second of these, with his music for

Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) from Vienna to Hollywood
From the cinematic viewpoint, the careers of Max Steiner Franz Waxman and Erich Wolfgang Korngold seem to have parallels in that they all moved to Hollywood from a traditional classical musical education in Europe. Out of this group, though, Korngold was by far the most promising classical composer. His father Julius was a music critic in Vienna and the young Erich Wolfgang was a precocious child prodigy impressing composers of the stature of Gustav Mahler Richard Strauss and Giacomo Puccini with his composition skills at age 9. He then studied under Zemlinsky among others. By the early 30s, Korngold was firmly on the map as a classical composer of note with a number of operas in the grand Wagnerian style established in the repertoire, and Korngold himself was professor at the Vienna State Academy of Music. However at this time anti-Semitism was on the increase in Europe, and therefore Korngold readily accepted an invitation from director Max Reinhardt to move to Hollywood initially to adapt Mendelssohn 's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Erich Wolfgang Korngold Biographies of film composers abound with tales of precocious children, but none is more amazing than that of Erich Korngold. He was born in 1897, the son of Julius Korngold, Vienna's leading music critic. At the age of 11 he had already composed for piano a ballet, Der Schneemann (The Snowman); his teacher, Alexander Zemlinsky, orchestrated it, and it was premiered at the Viennese Court Opera in a command performance for the Emperor, Franz Josef, creating a sensation. A year later came a Piano Trio, of which Richard Strauss said (since I am unable to quote him verbatim, I omit quotation marks), I have recently heard a Piano Trio of exceptional brilliance and maturity. But more impressive than the talent displayed by the composer is the fact that he is a twelve year old boy. When Gustav Mahler heard the lad play some of his music he exclaimed, "A genius ... a genius!" And Giacomo Puccini said of him, "The boy has so much talent that he could easily give us some and still have enough left for himself." He was only 16 when he composed his two short operas, The

Composer. Along with fellow Europeans Max Steiner and Franz Waxman, Max Reinhardt before emigrating to the United States, Korngold was a child prodigy who began composing at age 13. Reinhardt brought him to Hollywood when the director made his ambitious film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935). Korngold's beautiful adaptation of Mendelssohn's music themes so impressed Warner Bros. that the studio hired him to score Captain Blood (dir. Michael Curtiz, 1935) and Anthony Adverse (1936, which won Korngold his first Oscar). He returned to Austria to stage an opera, but a postponement brought him back to Hollywood to work on The Adventures of Robin Hood (dir. Curtiz, 1938). The "Anschluss" of his native Austria forced him to remain in the US, becoming a citizen in 1943. Many Korngold aficionados consider Kings Row (1942) to be his greatest work. Other scores include Juarez (dir. William Dieterle, The Sea Wolf (dir. Curtiz, 1941), T he Constant Nymph Devotion (dir.
