Major Works:

Renaissance German Lieder such as Ich armer Mann
Italian Madrigals
Other Information: He is also known as Orlando di Lasso, Roland de Lassus, and sometimes Roland Delattre. Lassus' music represents the Flemish version of Renaissance polyphony. His work compares favorably to his Italian contemporary, Palestrina, his English contemporary, Byrd, and his Spanish contemporary, Victoria. He worked in many places in Europe most importantly in Rome as maestro of the Lateran (1553-1554), for Duke Albrecht V at the court of Munich in Bavaria (1556 or 1557), and as head of the ducal chapel (1560 until his death in 1594). His final years, unfortunately, were marked by emotional depression. Orlandus Lassus, [Orlande de Lassus, Orlando (di) Lasso, Orlandus Lassus, Roland de Lassus, Roland Delattre]
Franco-Flemish composer. Legend holds that as a choirboy with an uncommonly beautiful voice he was thrice kidnapped from his birthplace for service elsewhere. It is not certain, however, that he was ever a chorister in Mons. His first known position was in the service of Ferrante Gonzaga, who passed through the Low Countries in 1544 on his way to Italy. Lassus spent the next decade in Italy, at first with Gonzaga, later in the service of Constantino Castrioto of Naples. By 1553 he was choirmaster at St. John Lateran in Rome, remaining there for a year, then returning to his homeland and settling briefly in Antwerp. His career from 1556 was centered in Munich at the court chapel of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria, as maestro di cappella from 1563, with duties that included some travel in Germany, Flanders, France, and Italy. While employed at Munich, he came to know both Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli , each of whom spent time in the musical establishment he directed. His accomplishments brought formal recognition from Emperor Maximilian II, the French king Charles IX, and Pope Gregory XIII. Lassus's production of over 2,000 works in nearly every Latin, French, Italian, and German vocal genre known in his time places him among the most prolific and versatile composers of the era. A close connection between text and music, in both small- and large-scale respects, is perhaps the single most prominent characteristic of his output.

IVK: Orlandus Lassus and Catholic Polyphony in late 16th Century Germany
Those sections of the German-speaking countries that retained the old faith produced few important native composers during the 16th century, and these few contributed no essentially new elements to the music of the Catholic Church, but they include the great figure of Ludwig Senfl Isaac . He sang in the court choir of Maximilian I and then was appointed chamber composer. In 1520 Senfl appeared in Augsburg, where he completed Isaac's Choralis Constantinus. From 1523 to some time in the 1540's he was associated with the musical establishment of the Bavarian court at Munich, but then his trail disappears, and the date of his death is unknown, though he seems to have died before or during 1556.
Lassus About the middle of the 16th century, various European rulers began to raid the Netherlands for composers and singers to enrich their musical establishments. Just as the taste of Charles V led to the activity in Madrid of the musicians of his Netherlandish chapel choir and the tastes of Margaret of Parma and Duke Hercules II caused them to enlist Franco-Flemings for their courts at Brussels and Ferrara, so the desire of the German princes to improve their musical forces resulted in the presence of Franco-Flemings in Vienna, Dresden, Prague, and other capitals. The organization of the various Kapellen included also the hiring of Italian performers, and resulted in a change in German instrumental practice from the hitherto customary preference for wind instruments and lutes to the predominance of strings characteristic of the Italian taste.

28. Orlando Di Lasso
Biography, place among Renaissance composers, noted works, and honors.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~martins/program_notes/orlando_di_lasso.html
rlando di Lasso (also known as Roland de Lassus and Roland Delattre, b. Mons 1532 - d Munich 1594) is considered one of the greatest polyphonists of the late Renaissance and the essence of the Flemish tradition. A widely travelled individual, his places of residence include Rome (as chorus master at St John Lateran), Antwerp, Munich (in the employ of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria) where he settled, Flanders, Frankfurt, Northern Italy, the French Court, etc. There was a suggestion that he may even have visited England which has not been substantiated. He was awarded a hereditary nobility by Emperor Maximillian II in 1570. In 1575 he employed Giovanni Gabrieli which shows his desire for innovation as much as tradition. Lassus' versatility can be seen in an enormous output which encompasses every style of the period in over 2000 compositions: Italian madrigals, German lieder, French chansons, Latin motets, two passions, offices, masses and magnificats. In 1604, his sons published 516 of his motets. His skill earned the title of "Orpheus de Belgique" and "Principe della Musica". Of the two settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah to be sung as part of the Catholic liturgy for Matins on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday, the setting in five parts is a work of great mastery. In some ways this represents the development of structural devices which would later be used in opera and instrumental music.
