As a result of this project, the group "Be-Ta-Foli," featuring 13 African traditional musicians, Dahlke, and Ligeti, was formed. In October 1996, just before the third Other Minds Festival, he returned to Cote d'Ivoire, again on a commission from the Goethe Institute, to continue work with Be-Ta-Foli.

Featuring repetitive patterns, complex cross rhythms and a sly sense of humor Mystery System is another brilliant CD of adventurous music from the Ligeti family."

For his second Tzadik release Lukas focuses on electronics. Using the marimba lumina , a new instrument invented by the legendary electronic pioneer Don Buchla, he fuses electronic, acoustic, traditional, avant-garde, European, American and African influences to create a unique post minimal world of spinning polyrhythms and hypnotic textures. Beautiful and endlessly listenable."

Lukas Ligeti - solo electronic percussion.
“A new generation of musical Superman - a globally minded, technologically adept, technically sophisticated composer who also happens to be a virtuoso performer and accomplished improviser." LA Times Ligeti performs his music for solo electronic percussion on the marimba lumina, an electronic marimba designed by synth pioneer Donald Buchla. With this instrument he explores his interest in the motional aspect of music as well as the impact of computer technology on ways of playing percussion. The result is a collection of highly kinetic works far removed from the sterility of drum machine programming. Most of the sound material used was created by Ligeti by means of sampling, often during his travels in Africa, recording soundscapes, traditional instruments and other inspirations that are manipulated and altered to create highly original new melodies, rhythms and textures.
