Franz Liszt
Admittedly the greatest pianist in the annals of music, and a composer whose status in musical literature still forms a debatable question, b. at Raiding Hungary , 22 October, 1811; d. at Bayreuth, Germany , 31 July, 1886. His musical precocity was early recognized by his parents , and his first teacher was his father Adam Liszt, a musical amateur of rare culture. His first public appearance at Oedenburg at the age of nine was so startling a character , that several Hungarian magnates who were present at once assumed the financial responsibilities of his further musical education . Taken to Vienna by his father , who devoted himself exclusively to the development of his talented child, he studied the piano for six years with Czerny , and theory and composition with Salieri and Randhartinger. His first public appearance in Vienna (1 Jan., 1823) proved a noteworthy event in the annals of music. From Beethoven , who was present, down to the merest dilettante, everyone forthwith acknowledged his great genius. His entry to the Paris Conservatory, where his

Liszt made his public debut when he was nineteen years old. Soon afterwards prince Esterhazy heard him and was much impressed. Funds were raised for a serious musical education and Liszt went to Vienna to study composition with Salieri and piano with Czerny. After two years he was set to pursue his studies at the conservatory in Paris, but Cherubini, then the director of that institution, refused to admit him because he was a foreigner. After a further private eduction he played at the houses of rich families and in 1824 he made his debut in London. He caused a sensation and soon played at Drury Lane and before George IV.
The experience of seeing him perform usually put his audiences in Paris in a state ecstasy and when in 1830 he met Paganini, Berlioz and Chopin, they inspired him to exploit his romantic spirit and to find his own style as a composer.
The duchess d'Agoult left her husband in 1833 to follow Liszt and their liaison resulted in three children: Blandine, Cosima and Daniel. They separated in 1839. Under her writer's name Daniel Stern, Marie D'Agoult published the novel "Nlida", relating her relationship with Liszt. He probably never forgave her for doing so. Among Liszt's many other affairs with women was the one with Lola Montez, ending in Liszt locking Montez into a hotel room and running away himself.

He was a renowned performer throughout Europe during the nineteenth century, noted especially for his showmanship and great skill with the keyboard. Today, he is generally considered to be the greatest pianist in history, despite the fact that no recordings of his playing exist. Indeed, Liszt is frequently credited with re-defining piano playing itself, and his influence is still visible today. He also contributed greatly towards the Romantic idiom in general, and he is credited with the invention of the symphonic poem.

Introductory background
Liszt studied and played at Vienna and Paris and for most of his early adulthood toured throughout Europe giving concerts. He is credited with inventing the modern piano recital, where his virtuosity won him approval by composers and performers alike. His great generosity with both time and money benefited many people: victims of disasters, orphans and the many students he taught for free. He also contributed to the

Hungarian composer Franz Liszt was major figure in Romantic music who was celebrated during his lifetime as Europe's greatest pianist. He began playing for the public as a child, studied in Vienna and Paris and became a performer whose presence and dramatic playing made him an international star of the stage. He went to Weimar in 1848 and his teaching, composing and performing helped make it Germany's musical center. It's said that Liszt taught most of the next generation's greatest pianists. He wrote several piano pieces and became known for a distinctive, sometimes experimental style. FERENC LISZT
Franz Liszt has emerged as one of the most
awe-inspiring figures in all of music history. As
perhaps the greatest pianist of all time, who out
played such greats as Chopin and Thalberg, he also
proved to be a profound composer and musical
pioneer. His unique compositions bewildered,
inspired and inflamed the imaginations of his own
era, yet quite miraculously they also laid the seeds
for future generations. A brief overview indicates; (1) His piano
compositions stand as pinnacles of the literature, (2) he was one of the first modern conductors breathing life into a score in lieu of merely beating time, (3) he invented the symphonic poem, a new and elastic form to pour his unique ideas,(4) he developed the transformation of themes, later imitated by Wagner as a leitmotif, (5) he was the true pioneer of impressionism and atonal music,(6) he was the first ever to orchestrate on the piano,(7) he taught freely creating a school of disciples (Von Bulow, Rosenthal, Siloti, Friedheim, d'Albert and others) that carried his
