Essentially, Luther sought to recover core New Testament teachings that he claimed had been obscured by corruption and worldly traditions of medieval Catholicism. In particular, Luther opposed the idea, popularized by certain indulgence -sellers of his day, that one could buy salvation through monetary donations to the Church. Ever against this, Luther held that human beings could be saved by faith alone (sola fides) . He came to this understanding over the course of a long and tortuous personal struggle. After having made the most unjust and illiberal attack on Mr. Gerry, and stigmatized him as an enemy to his country, and the basest of mankind, for no other reason than a firm and conscientious discharge of an important trust reposed in that gentleman, had I not come in for a share of his censure, I confess I should have been both disappointed and mortified. It would have had at least the appearance, that the Landholder had discovered something in my principles, which he considered congenial with his own. However great may be my political sins, to be cursed with his approbation and applause, would be a punishment much beyond their demerit. But, Sir, at present I mean to confine myself to the original subject of controversy, the injustice of the charges made against Mr. Gerry. That my veracity will not be questioned when giving my negative to anonymous slander, I have the fullest confidence. I have equal confidence that it will be as little questioned by any who know me, even should the Landholder vouchsafe to give the Public his name—a respectable name I am sure it cannot be. Key Figures in the Aaron Burr Trial Aaron Burr Aaron Burr was a central figure in American public life for nearly three decades, but is remembered mainly for two episodes in his life: his duel with Alexander Hamilton in 1804 and his schemes of empire-building that formed the basis for his 1807 treason trial. Burr was born in Newark, New Jersey on February 6, 1756. Burr's parents died at an early age, leaving him in the care of an uncle who sometimes "beat him like a sack." Despite his hardships, Burr developed into an adventuresome and precocious child. At age 16, Burr graduated from Princeton. Three years later Burr joined Colonel Benedict Arnold's crusade against Quebec. His courage and success on the battlefield earned him a place on General Washington's staff. In 1782, Burr stood for the bar in Albany and opened a law practice. That same year Burr married Theodosia Prevost, a woman ten years his senior with whom he would enjoy a close and loving relationship until her death in 1794. The other great love in Burr's life was his superbly talented daughter, also named Theodosia, born a year after the couple's marriage. (His hopes for Theosia's career, and insistence that she not be denied opportunities open to men, have led some historians to call Burr America's "first male feminist.") By 1791, Burr had become a powerful political figure, having been elected United States Senator from New York. Burr's politics were marked by his liberal instincts and his expansionist dreams. In the election of 1800, Burr tied Thomas Jefferson in the electoral college. FRtR Biographies A Biography of Luther Martin 1748-1826 Quote Like many of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention, Luther Martin attended the College of New Jersey (later Princeton), from which he graduated with honors in 1766. Though born in Brunswick, NJ., in 1748, Martin moved to Maryland after receiving his degree and taught there for 3 years. He then began to study the law and was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1771. Martin was an early advocate of American independence from Great Britain. In the fall of 1774 he served on the patriot committee of Somerset County, and in December he attended a convention of the Province of Maryland in Annapolis, which had been called to consider the recommendations of the Continental Congress. Maryland appointed Luther Martin its attorney general in early 1778. In this capacity, Martin vigorously prosecuted Loyalists, whose numbers were strong in many areas. Tensions had even led to insurrection and open warfare in some counties. While still attorney general, Martin joined the Baltimore Light Dragoons. In July 1781 his unit joined Lafayette's forces near Fredericksburg, VA., but Martin was recalled by the governor to prosecute a treason trial. Martin married Maria Cresap on Christmas Day 1783. Of their five children, three daughters lived to adulthood. His postwar law practice grew to become one of the largest and most successful in the country. In 1785 Martin was elected to the Continental Congress, but this appointment was purely honorary. His numerous public and private duties prevented him from traveling to Philadelphia.

Condemned as a heretic, he began the Reformed Church in 1525. Martin Luther was one of a houseful of children, the son of Hans Luder, who worked in the copper mines, and his wife Margarethe, a harsh disciplinarian. He was a good student, a quiet boy. He entered Erfurt University, the best school of the time, in 1501, graduating with a BA in 1502 and an MA in 1505. His father wished him to be a lawyer, but to his disappointment, Luther was drawn to the study of the Scriptures. The legend is told that he swore to become a monk on 7/02/1505 when he survived a terrible storm. He entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt and took his monk's vow in 1506. The life of a monk during Luther's time was hard, consisting of fasting, prayer and work. A monk's day began at 3:00 AM with the first hourly prayers. This time molded Luther, above all he found a close relationship to the Bible which characterized his later life and work. In 1507 he was ordained a priest, and went to the University of Wittenberg, where he lectured on philosophy and the Scriptures, becoming a powerful and influential preacher and university professor.
