Expressed in the poetry and music of Guillaume de Machaut
amour courtois gave birth to the chanson. These concepts may seem lofty, but, in truth, the impish medieval mentality of those who were not philosophers was merely loftiness in another guise. God and Divine Love was still man's focal point, even if the ecclesiastical hierarchy was a target for mockery and laughter. It was the concept of God that had changed. Simple faith was not lost, but minds that did not care to fathom the depths of divine love identified it with human love and its passions. God, as a symbol of love, was looking on with divine approval at all love relationships, including the illicit. Love of the courtly tradition was seen as a chivalric quest for the beloved. It is natural, then, that the love was often unrequited, as fulfilment was an almost unattainable ideal. The poets presented love in a refined and stylized manner, using every dimension of the beauty of language and the expression of music. During the late Middle Ages, marriages were often arranged at birth, and may well have taken place when the partners were still children. As a result, the courtly society delighted in a tradition where women were infinitely beautiful and men unfailingly courteous; this fallacy romped beside the griffin in the imagination. The poets, disciplining poetic style where they could not discipline the emotions it expressed, borrowed the rhythms of the dance to form metrical poetic lines.

Guillaume de Machaut
(c.1300 - 1377)
Guillaume de Machaut (d.1377) is one of the undisputed pinnacle geniuses of Western music, and the most famous composer of the Middle Ages. Today his four-voice Mass of Notre Dame . The remainder of the fourteenth century was an epic of wars and plagues, and one of the few periods in which the population of Europe declined, but Machaut's reputation continued to rise. He went on to serve two kings of France, and was charged with a task as important as accompanying hostages during the English war. In 1361 the Dauphine was received in Machaut's quarters, an exceptional event. By the 1370s Machaut's name was associated with Pierre de Lusignan, King of Cyprus, thus establishing his fame nearly as far as Asia. Machaut is frequently portrayed today as an avant garde virelais and especially the lengthy lais . He also acted decisively to refine the emerging polyphonic song forms

Guillaume de Machaut
c. 1160-1225
Probably born in Rheims, Machaut was the leading exponent of the Ars Nova movement that flourished in France during the fourteenth century. In 1323 he joined the royal household of John of Lux embourg, King of Bohemia, and served as a clerk for about 20 years, widely respected as a poet as well as a composer. He travelled with the court, but increasingly spent his time composing rather than in administration. His first verified composition was a motet written in 1324 for the election of the Archbishop of Rheims. Through the efforts of King John, Machaut was granted several benefices, in particular the canonry of the new Gothic cathedral in Rheims, granted in 1337. He took up residency there in 1340, leaving his formal work with the king though remaining in service until the monarch's death at the battle of Crecy in 1346. Machaut was one of the earliest known users of syncopated rhythm, and was at the forefront of rhythmic experimentation in both his religious and his secular music. His Hoquetus David is one of the first pieces of purely instrumental music in modern Western times. In addition, he composed for voices in a wider vocal range than was previously thought possible. In all he wrote more than 140 (mainly polyphonic) compositions, although fewer than two dozen have been found outside his own collections, suggesting that he protected his work fiercely. After the outbreak

Guillaume de Machaut
(c.1300-1377)
We have no precise knowledge of Guillaume de Machaut's early years. He was probably born around 1300 in the diocese of Rheims in Champagne and he may have spent some time studying in Paris where, since the 13th century, the most sophisticated musical theories had been elaborated. A papal bull of Benedict XII dated 1335 states that for about twelve years Guillaume had been the almoner ( clericus elimosinarius ), secretary and familiar of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia whom he accompanied on his expeditions throughout Europe. This great feudal lord, King of Bohemia and stalwart and inalienable ally of the royal house of France, travelled the length and breadth of Europe in pursuit of his various military and political campaigns, and his secretary followed faithfully at his side throughout these often turbulent peregrinations. Dit de la Harpe, 255-256), Machaut composed all abundance of poems. The future king Charles V even paid him a visit at home in 1361. Near the end of his life, his output was copied, at the request of his illustrious patrons and admirers, into a set of manuscripts beautifully written in calligraphic script and richly illuminated. The author himself seems to have supervised their preparation and production, since all the pieces are meticulously ordered: the narrative poems or dits, which are purely literary, come before the compositions in Lyric style and the sacred works (the Mass and Latin motets). Only a part of the writings in lyric style (consisting of lais, ballades, rondeaux, virelais, as they are ordered in the manuscripts) is set to music. In Machaut's case, the poet ultimately takes precedence over the musician.

About Guillaume de Machaut
Guillaume de Machaut and the Remede de Fortune Machaut died in 1377. If he can be called a trouvère, his life followed a quite different pattern from most trouvères. Like Machaut, they benefited from highly placed patronage, but none had the important position within the church hierarchy that Machaut enjoyed at Reims. Machaut had a professional status most of them never attained, and he moved with equal ease in sacred and secular spheres. What especially characterizes Machaut and sets him off from earlier traditions is that he was one of the first writers to whom the words "poet" or "author" in the modern sense could be applied. Machauts works may be divided into the categories he establishes with one exception in his manuscripts: narrative verse, lyric poetry, and musical compositions. Music is usually in its own section in the manuscript, and notated pieces normally appear only there. For example, a lyric poem may be found without music in the lyric poetry section, but if it is to have music, it recurs with its music in the music section. Musical compositions are divisible into secular ( ballades, rondeaux, virelais, lais

Machaut also spelled MACHAULT (b. c. 1300, Machault, Fr.d. 1377, Reims), French poet and musician, greatly admired by contemporaries as a master of French versification and regarded as one of the leading French composers of the Ars Nova q.v. ) musical style of the 14th century. It is on his shorter poems and his musical compositions that his reputation rests. He was the last great poet in France to think of the lyric and its musical setting as a single entity. He took holy orders and in 1323 entered the service of John of Luxembourg, king of Bohemia, whom he accompanied on his wars as chaplain and secretary. He was rewarded for this service by his appointment in 1337 as canon of Reims cathedral. After the King's death, he found another protector in the King's daughter, Bonne of Luxembourg, wife of the future king John II of France, and in 1349 in Charles II, king of Navarre. Honours and patronage continued to be lavished by kings and princes on Machaut at Reims until his death. In his longer poems Machaut did not go beyond the themes and genres already widely employed in his time. Mostly didactic and allegorical exercises in the well-worked
