At age fifteen Gustav entered the Vienna Conservatory, where he received a diploma three years later. The early failure of his own music to win recognition sparked a remarkable conducting career that took Mahler to all the great opera houses and concert halls of Europe. Conducting earned him a fortune, but it also meant that composing, his first love, was relegated to the off-season. Throughout much of his life, Mahler composed in isolation in summer cottages. Fidelio, which he almost single-handedly rescued from a reputation for tawdriness. In 1902 Mahler married Alma Schindler, a woman nearly twenty years his junior. They had two daughters, and when Mahler set to work on his Kindertotenlieder The Mahler biographer Henry-Louis de La Grange has effectively contradicted the popular image of Mahler as congenitally ill. A small man, Mahler was nonetheless physically active, an avid hiker and swimmer throughout most of his life. Nonetheless, he was a man drunk on work, and he grew more inebriated with age. His response to the fatigue and illness was often simply to work more. In 1901, for example, he collapsed after conducting, in the same day, a full-length opera and a symphony concert. He immediately set to work on his Symphony no. 5, which begins with a funeral march.

That isn't to say every recording is beyond criticism, far from it, but, leaving aside personal preferences, it seems every recording I have heard (except one) is of a uniform standard of excellence I don't think can be found in other Mahler symphony recordings. Is the work "conductor proof" ? Not in the last analysis, but it certainly comes closer than the others if the many differing interpretations that are available is any evidence to go by.

Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Founder Len Mullenger Home Composer Profiles Non-British composers /Mahler Music Webmaster Len Mullenger: Len@musicweb.uk.net The Mahler Symphonies A synoptic survey by Tony Duggan Das Lied von der Erde Death was no stranger to Mahler. In childhood it visited his home and took away brothers and sisters. In adult life he faced it down by pinning it all over his creative work in the form of funeral marches, settings of songs about more children dying, of drummer boys going to battlefields, of soldiers facing execution. Death was personal. It drank in the taverns, it stared back in the reflections of mountain streams, it glowered from the trees in the forests. Nearer the end of his own short life, however, death lost its sting and the composition of "Das Lied Von der Erde" ("The Song of The Earth") could be looked on as the drawing of that sting. The work is a symphony in all but name and form. A completely novel creation: a "song-symphony". This fact proved useful since Mahler shied away from calling it his "Ninth Symphony". Composers died after their Ninths. Composition extended over 1908 and 1909, but the first performance didn't take place until six months after Mahler's death in 1911 when it was conducted by Bruno Walter.

A famous conductor during his lifetime, Gustav Mahler has since been deemed a significant composer whose work is a bridge between the Romanticism of the 19th century and the modern compositions of the 20th century. He studied piano and composition in Vienna when he was a teenager, and by the time he was in his 20s he was making a name for himself as a conductor. He held positions in Prague, Leipzig and Budapest before becoming the chief conductor of the Hamburg Opera in 1891. He also conducted Vienna's State Opera House (1897-1907) and the New York Philharmonic Society (1908-11), while composing songs, nine numbered symphonies and, his most famous work, Das Lied von der Erde (1908, not called a symphony by Mahler because of superstition he admired Anton Bruckner and

Introduction
Mahler was a composer of symphonies and lieder cycles. However, during his lifetime, he was known, for the most part, as one of the world's greatest conductors. Mahler rose to prominence as musical director of the Vienna Opera, and under his leadership the VO experienced its golden age. Mahler finished his conducting career in the United States, serving with Toscanini as conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and solely as music director of the New York Philharmonic. Mahler completed ten symphonies (nine numbered works and Das Lied von der Erde) and died leaving sketches and two completed movements of a tenth numbered symphony. (Performance versions of the 10th have been presented by several individuals, including Deryck Cooke [in several revised forms], Clinton Carpenter, Joseph Wheeler and Remo Mazetti.
