Stage Music Orchestral Music An impressive list of orchestral compositions includes six symphonies, the first of them written for Koussevitzky, who commissioned one a year. There are concertos for a variety of instruments, including five for piano and a useful Rhapsody-Concerto for viola and orchestra. The variety of his terms of reference may be seen in his Frescos of Piero della Francesca, The Parables and his earlier Villa by the Sea, based on the evocative painting of Bcklin. His Czech origins are generally identifiable in his music, which nevertheless reflects the influence also of France, while returning at times to earlier musical traditions. Bohuslav Martinu December 8 August 28 ) was a Czech composer Martinu studied briefly at the Prague Conservatory (before being dismissed for "incorrigible negligence") and later continued to study on his own. He left Czechoslovakia for Paris in 1923, although he retained many links with his birthplace. When the German army approached Paris early in the Second World War he fled, first to the south of France, and then to the United States in 1941 where he settled in New York with his French wife. In later life he lived in Switzerland, never returning to his homeland. Martinu was a very prolific composer, writing almost 400 pieces. He is less well known as his countryman, Leos Janacek , but many of his works are regularly performed or recorded, among them his choral work, The Epic of Gilgamesh (1955); his

and Igor Stravinsky Claude Debussy Richard Strauss . The works, culminating in the ballet Istar, are good, but not terribly individual or memorable. From about 1918 through the 1920s, Martin worked hard to discover his true artistic self. Czech Rhapsody , the Three Czech Dances for two pianos, and the Duo No. 1 for violin and cello hint at works written twenty years later. He comes more and more under the influence of Stravinsky, but unlike many others becomes less like Stravinsky and more Czech. Perhaps he saw the relation of Russian folk music to Stravinsky's highly sophisticated and knowing musical approach and figured out his artistic salvation. Whatever, Czech folk influences become subject to a neoclassical musical view. At this point, we get such works as the Suites for string orchestra

1890 - Born on December 8th in Poli ka, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (now in Czech Republic). A modern Czech composer whose works exhibit a distinctive blend of French and Czech influences.

1922 - He studied under Josef Suk, a leader of the movement toward nationalism in Czech music.
1923 - He went to Paris to study under the French composer Albert Roussel.
1925-1928 - His orchestral works Poli ka (Half-Time) and La Bagarre were inspired by contemporary events, respectively a Czech-French football (soccer) game and the crowds that met Charles Lindbergh's plane as it ended its transatlantic flight.
1940 - Martino fled the German invasion of France and settled in the United States, where he taught at Princeton University and at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, Massachusetts.
