From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Pietro Mascagni in 1903 Pietro Antonio Stefano Mascagni (December 7, 1863 – August 2, 1945) was an Italian composer most noted for his operas . His 1890 masterpiece Cavalleria rusticana caused one of the greatest sensations in opera history and single-handedly ushered in the Verismo movement in Italian dramatic music. However, though it has been stated that Mascagni, like Leoncavallo , was a "one-opera man" who could never repeat his first success, this is inaccurate. L'amico Fritz and Iris have been popular in Europe since their respective premieres. In fact, Mascagni himself claimed that at one point Iris was performed in Italy more often than Cavalleria (cf. Stivender). Mascagni wrote a total of seventeen operas and operetta , several orchestral and vocal works, as well as songs and piano music. He enjoyed immense success during his lifetime, both as a composer and conductor of his own and other people's music. If he never repeated the international success of Cavalleria it was probably because Mascagni refused to copy himself. The variety of styles in his operas — the Sicilian passion and warmth of

Mascagni, Pietro
(b . Dec. 7, 1863, Livorno, Kingdom of Italyd. Aug. 2, 1945, Rome, Italy), Italian operatic composer, one of the principal exponents of verismo a style of opera writing marked by melodramatic, often violent plots with characters drawn from everyday life. Mascagni studied at the conservatory at Milan, but, unable to submit to the discipline of his master, Amilcare Ponchielli, he left to join a traveling opera company. In 1889 he won the first prize in a competition with his one-act opera Cavalleria rusticana, based on a Sicilian melodrama by Giovanni Verga. Produced at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome, on May 17, 1890, it was an instant success and subsequently maintained its popularity, usually being given with Ruggero Leoncavallo's one-act Pagliacci. Le maschere (1901), reviving the commedia dell'arte, is musically superior, though it had little success. He succeeded Arturo Toscanini as musical director of La Scala, Milan, in 1929. Among Mascagni's other operas are L'amico Fritz Iris (1898), and

PIETRO MASCAGNI
Operas Mascagni won his first success with Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry), first staged in Rome in 1890. This is an example of verismo, operatic realism, that exercised considerable influence. The opera deals with a tale of love and jealousy in a Sicilian village, the drama ending in the death of Turiddu, the young Santuzza's faithless lover, whom she betrays to a man whom he has deceived. Of Mascagni's later operas L'amico Fritz and Iris, the latter set in Japan, won some success. Both have provided popular tenor arias.
