    Mendelssohn, Felix
Mendelssohn, Felix (Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn) u ls u u key , German composer; grandson of the Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn . Mendelssohn was one of the major figures in 19th-century music. His father, Abraham, upon conversion to Christianity, changed his surname to Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, a seldom-used form. A prodigy, reared in a highly cultured atmosphere, the young Felix presented his orchestral compositions to illustrious audiences at the family estate. His first mature work, the Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, was composed at 17, and he showed similar precocity at the piano. In 1829, he conducted the St. Matthew Passion, stimulating a revival of interest in the music of J. S. Bach Scottish Italian (1833), and Reformation (1832) are best known. Frequently performed are his Violin Concerto in E Minor (1845); The Hebrides Overture or Fingal's Cave (1832); and two oratorios

FELIX MENDELSSOHN
Born: February 3, 1809. Hamburg, Germany
Died: November 4, 1847. Leipzig, Germany
German composer and conductor. Mendelssohn was an important figure in the revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in the nineteenth century.

The Mendelssohn household was one of the cultural centers of Berlin. The family was wealthy thanks to its banking interests, and its garden home served as a concert hall in which Felix and his sister Fanny often performed and had their works played. It was on just such an occasion that the public heard a marvelous work by the seventeen-year-old Felix: his Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream
Felix Mendelssohn was something of a prodigy. He wrote his first piece at the age of eleven, beginning a prolific period in which the youth created pieces in virtually every genre from sonatas to concertos and even a Singspiel. At the age of twenty, he conducted a performance of Bach 's St. Matthew Passion at the Berlin Singakademie. This was the first modern performance of the work and was an important event in the nineteenth century rediscovery of Bach.
At about the same time, Felix began to travel widely; the next few years took him to England, Scotland and Italy. Besides spreading his reputation, these journeys were important for the pieces that they yielded. Some, such as his "Italian" symphony and the

F elix Mendelssohn is regarded by classical music aficionados and critics alike, as one of the most prolific and gifted composers the world has ever known. Even those who could not name any of his works have heard it, as his "Wedding March" from "A Midsummer Night's Dream", which has accompanied many a bride down the aisle. Whether he was born with his incredible talent or was the product of an artistically and intellectually-inclined family will remain a mystery, but like all prodigies, Mendelssohn showed signs of true genius from childhood. Regarded by some critics as the 19th century equivalent of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and others as a great composer who's contribution would have been greater, had his life been marred with more hardships, everyone should agree that he deserves his place amongst the best, and most influential.

Marriage and maturity.
In 1835 Mendelssohn was overcome by the death of his father, Abraham, whose dearest wish had been that his son should complete St . Paul. Jeanrenaud, the daughter of a French Protestant clergyman. Though she was 10 years younger than himself, that is to say, no more than 16, they became engaged and were married on March 28, 1837. His sister Fanny, the member of his family who remained closest to him, wrote of her sister-in-law: "She is amiable, childlike, fresh, bright and even-tempered, and I consider Felix most fortunate for, though inexpressibly fond of him, she does not spoil him, but when he is capricious, treats him with an equanimity which will in course of time most probably cure his fits of irritability altogether." This was magnanimous praise on the part of Fanny, to whom Mendelssohn was drawn by musical as well as emotional ties. Fanny was not only a composer in her own rightshe had herself written some of the Songs Without Words attributed to her brotherbut she seems to have exercised, by her sisterly companionship, a powerful influence on the development of his inner musical nature.
