Jump to: navigation search Previous (Felix Guattari) Next (Felony and misdemeanor) Felix Mendelssohn at the age of thirty Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , born and known generally as Felix Mendelssohn (February 3, 1809 – November 4, 1847) was a German composer and conductor of the early Romantic period. He revived classical approaches within the Romantic movement, whose excesses and manners he condemned as vulgar. A child prodigy akin to Mozart and Beethoven , Mendelssohn composed some of his best works as a teenager. He did not experiment with novel forms as his contemporaries Hector Berlioz and Robert Schumann ; instead, he employed classical structures such as symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. Born into a well-to-do Jewish family who later converted to Christianity, Mendelssohn benefited from the best education, was handsome and athletic, and was a master of water-color painting and several European languages. This overabundance of good fortune, and his Jewish background, was resented by certain fellow musicians and critics and even used as a platform for diminishing his talent as lacking in innovation and depth. Aware of his unique gifts of subtle lyricism and his mastery of technique, Mendelssohn cultivated those rather than allowing himself to be restrained by forms of virtuosity then in vogue. His performance of Bach's

Mendelssohn, Felix,
in full JAKOB LUDWIG FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY (b. Feb. 3, 1809, Hamburgd. Nov. 4, 1847, Leipzig), German composer, pianist, musical conductor, and teacher, one of the most celebrated figures of the early Romantic period. In his music Mendelssohn largely observed Classical models and practices while initiating key aspects of Romanticismthe artistic movement that exalted feeling and the imagination above rigid forms and traditions. Among his most famous works are Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream Italian Symphony (1833), a violin concerto (1844), two piano concerti (1831, 1837), the oratorio Elijah (1846), and several pieces of chamber music. He was a grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn.
Early life and works.
Felix was born of Jewish parents, Abraham and Lea Salomon Mendelssohn, from whom he took his first piano lessons. Though the Mendelssohn family was proud of their ancestry, they considered it desirable, in accordance with 19th-century liberal ideas, to mark their emancipation from the ghetto by adopting the Christian faith. Accordingly Felix, together with his brother and two sisters, was baptized in his youth as a Lutheran Christian. The name Bartholdy, a family property on the river Spree, was held by a wealthy maternal uncle who had embraced Protestantism. When the fortune of this relative passed to the Mendelssohns, his name was adopted by them. In 1811, during the French occupation of Hamburg, the family had moved to Berlin, where Mendelssohn studied the piano with Ludwig Berger and composition with K.F. Zelter, who, as a composer and teacher, exerted an enormous influence on his development. Other teachers gave the Mendelssohn children lessons in literature and landscape painting, with the result that at an early age Mendelssohn's mind was widely cultivated. His personality was nourished by a broad knowledge of the arts and was also stimulated by learning and scholarship. He traveled with his sister to Paris, where he took further piano lessons and where he appears to have become acquainted with the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Composers Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn, Felix Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, b. Hamburg, Feb. 3, 1809, was one of the major German romantic composers. He was the son of a banker and grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. In 1812 the family moved to Berlin. Young Felix (along with his sister Fanny, a talented pianist and composer) received his first piano lessons from his mother; he subsequently studied with Ludwig Berger and Carl Friedrich Zelter.
Mendelssohn showed a surprising gift for composition at an early age. He wrote his famous overture to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream when he was 17; by then he had also written 12 symphonies for string orchestra. He later composed additional numbers for the play in 1834. Mendelssohn traveled extensively, especially to England, and in 1835 he became conductor of the Gewandhaus orchestra in Leipzig, directing first performances of symphonies by Franz Schubert and by his friend Robert Schumann. In 1837 he married Cecile Jeanrenaud, the daughter of a French Huguenot clergyman (Mendelssohn, though of Jewish descent, was baptized a Protestant in 1824).
