Biography
Meyerbeer was born to a Jewish family in Tasdorf, near Berlin, Germany with the name Jacob Liebmann Beer . His father was the enormously wealthy financier Jacob Judah Herz Beer (1769 — 1825) and his much-beloved mother, Amalia Liebmann Meyer Wulff (1767 — 1854) also came from the wealthy elite. Their other children included the astronomer Wilhelm Beer and the poet Michael Beer. Meyerbeer made his debut as a nine-year old playing a Mozart concerto in Berlin. Throughout his youth, although he was determined to become a musician, he found it difficult to decide between playing and composition. Certainly other professionals in the decade 1810-1820, including Moscheles, considered him amongst the greatest virtuosi of his period. In his youth Beer studied with Antonio Salieri and the German master and friend of Goethe , Carl Friedrich Zelter. Realizing, however, that a full understanding of Italian

COMPOSER, PIANIST (GERMANY) BORN 5 Sep 1791, Vogelsdorf (near Berlin) - DIED 2 May 1864, Paris
REAL NAME Beer, Yaakov Liebmann
GRAVE LOCATION Berlin: Jdischer Friedhof in Prenzlauer Berg , Schnhauser Allee 23-25 (Feld W1 (Ehrengrab))
Son of the rich sugar refiner Judah Herz Beer and the daughter of a banker from Berlin. The family lived in Berlin and as a child he was already recognized as one the best pianists in the city. He was taught by Muzio Clementi and Abbe Vogler and made friends with Carl Maria von Weber. In 1815 Salieri adviced him to learn voice composition in Italy and using the name Giacomo Meyerbeer he started composing Italian opera's.
Until 1824 he composed six opera's that rivalled even Rossini's and found himself famous. "Il Crociato in Egitto" attracted attention abroad and made him move to Paris. In 1826 he married his first cousin Minna Mosson.
In 1831 his opera "Robert le Diable" was produced. It was very influencial in France. Other French opera's were "Les Huguenots" (1836), "Le Prophte" (1849) and "L'africaine" (1865). In 1842 he became Director of Music in Berlin and there he created the opera "Ein Feldlager de Schliessen".
Meyerbeer was attacked by Wagner in the latter's "Jewry in Music" (1850), who accused him of commercialism in his work. In earlier years he had supported Wagner during the production of his "Rienzi" in Dresden as well as financially, and he never responded to in public to Wagner's attack.

Meyerbeer, Giacomo,
original name JAKOB LIEBMANN MEYER BEER (b. Sept. 5, 1791, Tasdorf, near Berlind. May 2, 1864, Paris), German opera composer who established in Paris a vogue for spectacular romantic opera. Born of a wealthy Jewish family, Meyerbeer studied composition in Berlin and later at Darmstadt, where he formed a friendship with C.M. von Weber. His early German operas, produced at Munich, Stuttgart, and Vienna, were failures, and after a journey to Paris and London he settled in 1816 in Italy, where he produced five operas in the style of Rossini. The best of these was Il crociato Robert le Diable (Paris, 1831), produced on an extremely lavish scale and calculated to appeal to the current romantic taste for medievalism, the supernatural, and the macabre. Its success was immediate, establishing this work as the model of French grand opera. Les Huguenots was similarly successful in 1836. In 1842 Meyerbeer temporarily returned to Berlin, where he became music director to the King of Prussia and where he prompted the production of Wagner's During this period he wrote a German opera

b Berlin, 5 September 1791
d Paris, 2 May 1864, aged seventy-two
He was the eldest son of a successful Jewish banker. He spent three years from 1810 to 1813 studying at Darmstadt, making a close friendship with fellow student Weber. A period of composition in Vienna met with only a mixed success, but a move to Italy and the writing of operas in imitation of Rossini brought him fame. In 1826 his father, Weber, and his two children died in Berlin and this checked his career; he did not leave Berlin until 1830. His great wealth made it easy for him to stage lavish productions and he was fortunate, too, in having Scribe as his librettist. The enormous popularity of his operas and the influence of his family earned him the post of General-musikdirektor in Berlin from 1842 to 1849. However, anti-Semitic criticism by such people as Wagner and Heine proved damaging to his health.
