Claudio Monteverdi (May 15, 1567 (baptised) – November 29, 1643) was an Italian composer, violinist, and singer considered a crucial figure in the history of music. His work bridged the "old practice" and the "new practice" and, thus, enabled the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. During his long life, he produced eight books of madrigals and forty operas, which can be classified in both old and new categories, and he was well versed in both. Having taken over opera from the Florentine "camerata" and introduced the Baroque method of declamation with continuo accompaniment, he enriched it with an unprecedented expressiveness, and moved from the Renaissance ensemble of diverse instruments in La Favola d'Orfeo, to an early version of the Baroque ensemble, where specific categories of instruments were used for mood painting. Monteverdi was one of the most significant innovators that brought about the change in style. His later madrigals were revolutionary in that they were arranged in parts for voices or instruments (concerted style);

The beginnings of Opera
In the last years of the sixteenth century, a group of musicians and literati in Florence, Italy experimented with a new method of composing dramatic vocal music, modeling their ideas after the precepts of ancient Greek theater. Their intent was that this new music should prove more direct and communicative to an audience, as the complex polyphony of the Renaissance could very often obscure the text being sung. They instead set a single melodic line against a basic chordal accompaniment, and with this notion of homophony , a new era of music began. The Florentine Camerata called this new form of musical-dramatic entertainment opera . The first operas were private affairs, composed for the Italian courts. But when in 1637 the first public opera house opened in Venice, Italy, opera became a commercial industry, and the genre in which many composers throughout history first tried out new ideas and new techniques of composition.

    Monteverdi, Claudio
    Monteverdi, Claudio key , Italian composer; first great figure in the history of opera. His earliest published works, a set of three motifs, appeared when he was only 15. In 1590 he entered the service of the duke of Mantua, becoming choir master in the ducal court in 1601. Monteverdi's first opera, Orfeo, performed at Mantua in 1607, was revolutionary in its combination of dramatic power and expressive orchestral accompaniment. Of his next opera, Arianna (1608), only the celebrated lament, which Monteverdi himself arranged as a five-part madrigal, is extant. In 1613, Monteverdi was appointed choirmaster of St. Mark's, Venice, where he remained until his death. He took holy orders in 1632. Although he wrote mostly church music after settling in Venice, he continued to develop his dramatic gifts in many secular madrigals and dramatic cantatas such as Il combattimento di Tancredi e di Clorinda (1624). After the first public opera house opened in Venice in 1637, the aged Monteverdi produced his last operas, including

Operas: Orfeo Vi ricorda o boschi ombrosi In un fiorito prato Arianna: Lament Il ritorno d'Ulisse L'Incoronazione di Poppea Vespers Mass: In illo tempore Other Information: Although a birthdate is not known, Monteverdi was baptized on May 15, 1567. He was among the first of the Ars Nova composers. The development of Monteverdi's style can be easily seen in his madrigals. The early ones (Books 1-4) are in the old Renaissance contrapuntal style of four equal voices, but after 1603 (Book 5) he began to write madrigals with an added basso continuo part and an exalted soprano part. Books 6-9 mix the basso continuo/homphonic/concertato style with the old contrapuntal style. In Book 7 he used a Romanesca and other ground bass forms like the chaconne and passacaglia. Book 8 contains his Madrigal of War and Love which displays a range of human passions in the stile concitato (agitated style of repeated 16th notes, tremelo, rapid scale passages, pizzicato, dotted rhythms, no bel canto but more like recitative in style).
