Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (also spelled Musorgsky, Moussorgsky Russian Modest Petrovič Musorgskij ) (21 March O.S. 9 March] 1839 – 28 March [O.S. 16 March] 1881), one of the Russian composers known as the Five , was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history Russian folklore , and other nationalist themes, including the opera Boris Godunov , the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain , and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition For many years Mussorgsky's works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers. Many of his most important compositions have recently come into their own in their original forms, and some of the original scores are now also available.

MODEST PETROVICH MUSSORGSKY
Operas Piano Music Mussorgsky's 1874 suite Pictures at an Exhibition, a tribute to the versatile artist Hartman, has proved the most popular of all the composer's works, both in its original version for piano and in colourful orchestral versions, of which that by Maurice Ravel has proved the most generally acceptable. Linked by Promenades for the visitor to the exhibition, Mussorgsky represents in music a varied collection, from the Market of Limoges and the Catacombs to the final Great Gate of Kiev, a monumental translation into music of an architectural design for a triumphal gateway. Vocal Music Mussorgsky wrote a number of choral works and songs, many of the latter of considerable interest, including the group The Nursery. The Song of the Flea, based on Goethe's Mephistophelean song in Faust, is a bass favourite. [74'00"] full-price by Johann D'Souza Modest-ly speaking, Mussorgsky was not really known to be an experienced musician. However we are told that he was a competent pianist, having taught himself with little instruction from Balakirev, both members of The Five. (I have full respect for pianist-composers - because they write the most difficult pieces as well as the most sublime pieces for the piano). Mussorgsky did not really compose a wide selection of pieces in his short life of 42 years, but many of his works are dearly remembered. Mussorgsky (right, painted in his final year by Ilya Repin) suffered from psychological problems and alcoholism. It is surprising, but I am now in full belief that you have to be mentally unstable, depressed, and/or turbulent in order to compose works of great inspiration. Eg. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2

Mussorgsky, Modest Petrovich
Russian composer, considered one of the most original and influential of 19th-century Russian nationalist composers.
Mussorgsky was born in Karevo. When he was 18 years old he met Russian nationalist composer Aleksandr Dargomyzhsky , through whom Mussorgsky joined the circle of Russian nationalist composers now known as The Five.
Mussorgsky was largely self-taught in composition. His bold, unorthodox harmonies, based on the scales of Russian folk music, influenced later non-Russian composers. His songs, among the finest of the 19th century, reflect his desire to reproduce the rhythms and contours of Russian speech. So also does his masterpiece, the opera Boris Godunov , based on a drama by Russian author Aleksandr Pushkin (completed in 1868). Mussorgsky's other works include the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition (1874, orchestrated in 1922 by French composer Maurice Ravel

'Pictures at an Exhibition' by Modest Mussorgsky
Pictures at an Exhibition was written as a group of pieces for piano in 1874. The pictures were mainly watercolours, painted by Victor Hartman, a friend of Mussorgsky, who had died the previous year. The piece is a musical description of walking around an exhibition of Hartman's paintings. A recurring 'Promenade' movement represents the visitor. Each of the pieces has a movement conjuring up the mood invoked by the picture, or in some cases even painting the picture in music. Unfortunately, many of the original pictures no longer exist and Mussorgsky's music is all we have to remember them by. The Music The first movement is the 'Promenade', which depicts the visitor to the exhibition. This musical idea is interspersed between the earlier movements, representing the visitor walking from painting to painting. The 'Promenade' features shifting time signatures throughout, depicting the dawdling, irregular way a visitor to an exhibition would walk around. You may recognise the 'Promenade' theme as being the theme tune of the British political sit-com The New Statesman , starring Rik Mayall.
