Died: September 3rd, 1974 Country of origin: United States of America Further information: Profile News Profile His own major works were dramatic, their drama enhanced by the striking presence of his instruments. Largely ignored by standard musical institutions, he criticised concert traditions, the roles of performer and composer, the role of music in society, the twelve-tone equal-temperament scale and the concept of pure or abstract music. To explain his ideas, he wrote "Genesis of a music". Between 1930 and 1972, Partch, who held no teaching appointments, but had research posts at the universities of Wisconsin, Illinois, and California, created music dramas, dance theatre, vocal music and chamber music
mostly performed on instruments he built himself.

Composer John Beal: Harry Partch Bio Harry Partch
An obituary reads: "Harry Partch: American composer, librettist, philosopher, publisher, record distributor, teacher, satirist, instrument builder and designer, sculptor, instrument repairman and tuner, theorist, experimentalist, iconoclast, self-taught musician, percussionist, adapted violist, conductor, author, retired hobo, seaman, sewer cleaner, dishwasher and kitchen flunky, comedian, vagrant, member of the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, and graffitist. Until his death, Harry Partch had lived in San Diego and had been doing his own thing for more than half a century. Partch's own thing began with his rejection of the European masters and the traditional bourgeois concert-hall performance." [Numus-West; 6/74, Page 28]
Harry Partch was born in Oakland, California. His parents had been Presbyterian missionaries in China who endured the Boxer Rebellion. Two years after his birth, they moved to Arizona to homestead, but never for long in any one place; after age fourteen, in fact, Partch never stayed more than three years in any single residence. He roamed all over: Hawaii at age twenty, the Midwest and East and back to Northern and Southern California. Partch's early compositions, dating from the 1930's, are all vocal, with small instrumental accompaniments. They are masterpieces of Americana, employing the language in a natural style uninfluenced by European traditions.

He spent his childhood in small, remote towns in Arizona and New Mexico, where he heard and sang songs in Mandarin, Spanish, and American Indian languages. Partch was sterile , probably due to childhood mumps , and most of his loving relationships were with men. As a child, he learned to play the

13. Notes On Microtonal Composition
R.L. Reid s notes, including information on Partch.
http://www.rreid.net/tuning/partch_scale
A brief introduction to Harry Partch's 43 note scale Your best bet to understand this stuff is to get your hands on "Genesis of A Music" by Harry Partch. It was most recently reprinted by DaCapo in New York, but it is again out of print. Besides looking for it in libraries, you might aslo drop DaCapo a note letting them know you'd be interested in buying a copy if it is reprinted again. I'll only attempt a thumbnail sketch here. The pitches of Partch's scale are described as ratios. This is the ratio of two frequencies (or two strings lengths if they are otherwise identical) to each other. This is the method used by all people who work in just intonation. Partch's scale can be considered "extended just intonation". [Example of ratio notation - what most people call an octave, is expressed by the ratio pair 1/1 2/1, instead of a a'. If you aren't used to it, it may seem awkward. Once you're used to it, it's fairly obviously a more straight forward description of two pitches rather than letter names] So Partch uses an "11 limit" scale. He could have used a higher limit - and then had more notes to deal with. He says there's nothing magical about 43 or 11 - it's just the point at which he felt he had enough of a spread of tonal resources. [In my own practice, I treat it as a continuum - there are an infinite number of ratios and they are all potentially useful. But that reflects that I work in software and Partch worked in hardware.] So the ratios of Partch's scale are as follow. He indicated that 1/1 = 392 Hz, which is the G below A 440. This is nothing more than a starting point for measurement. 1/1 the Prime Unity 81/80 33/32 21/20 16/15 a minor second 12/11 a minorish second 11/10 a middling second 10/9 the small major second 9/8 the large major second 8/7 7/6 32/27 6/5 Minor third to 1/1 11/9 5/4 Major third to 1/1. the pure thirds are a strong facet of this scale 14/11 9/7 21/16 4/3 Fourth to 1/1 27/20 11/8 7/5 tritone 10/7 tritone 16/11 40/27 3/2 Fifth to 1/1 32/21 14/9 11/7 8/5 minor sixth to 1/1 18/11 5/3 major sixth to 1/1 27/16 12/7 seventh-natured 7/4 16/9 the small minor seventh 9/5 the large minor seventh 20/11 11/6 15/8 the small major sevenths 40/21 a very major seventh 64/33 160/81 2/1

Partch, Harry, Account of the Normandy Invasion by an American Glider Pilot, based on a recording of the pilot's recollections. Partch also wrote music based on such sources as newsboy cries, hitchhiker inscriptions, and hobo descriptions, the latter drawn from his own several years of experience riding the rails. Another of his innovations was the division of the octave into a 43-note scale. He designed and built string, keyboard, and percussion instruments to play the music composed from this scale and his iconoclastic book Genesis of a Music (1949) explains his tunings and theories. Partch wrote several stage works, including, in 1952, music for William Butler Yeats's adaptation of Sophocles' Oedipus. See T. McGeary, ed., Bitter Music: Collected Journals, Essays, Introductions, and Librettos (1991, repr. 2000); biography by B. Gilmore (1998).

Artist: PARTCH, HARRY Title: Delusion Of The Fury Label: COLUMBIA Format: Price: Catalog #: P 749311HLP Gatefold 180 gram vinyl reissue, originally released in 1971. "In this long-awaited masterwork, Harry Partch rises above all attempts at descriptive containment and becomes quite simply heroic. Delusions Of The Fury , proceeding from tragedy to comedy, is nothing less than the full, ritualistic expression, in vocal instrumental and corporeal terms, of the reconciliation by the living both with death and with life. It is a total Partch statement, incorporating voices, mime, his celebrated instruments, dance, lighting and staging, all working to express this philosophical concept. Delusion Of The Fury , as is to be expected, is not cast in the common dramatic/musical mold." Eugene Paul
