Spotlight on Engineer Maggi Payne Payne earned music degrees from Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, and Mills College. For ten years she was a recording engineer in the multi-track facilities at the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills, where she is currently co-director and teaches recording engineering, composition and electronic music. She was a production engineer at a major Bay Area radio station for ten years, and has been freelancing as a recording engineer and editor for Music and Arts (and its predecessor organization, Educational Media Associates of America, Inc.) and other record companies since 1981. Besides re-engineering historic live performance recordings, Maggi Payne has recorded and edited numerous original old and new music discs for various labels (indexed in the All Music Guide Classical website). Maggi Payne's latest album has just appeared on the CRI label. Titled The Extended Flute , it features music for flute and electronics from the 60's through the 90's and proves that the avant garde is alive and well. For three decades she has been extending flute techniques and involved in interactive performance with computers and electronics. On this album, she performs live interactive works of and with David Behrman and Mark Trayle and solo works by Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, William Brooks, and herself.

DISCOGRAPHY of WOMEN COMPOSERS' MUSIC
This is a discography (list of recordings) of some of the Knight Library's Douglass Room collection. The recordings usually do not circulate outside the Library, except to the faculty and Graduate Teaching Fellows of the University of Oregon. However, any item listed as Doug. Circ. is part of our Circulating Compact Disc Collection, and may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan, and by anyone with a UO-approved card. The call numbers designate the type of recording material represented. Those call numbers preceded by the designation PHONODISC are LP's; those with COMPACT DISC and CD's; and those with CASSETTE are cassettes or cassette kits. Note: Items marked with an asterisk ( ) designate those recordings for which we own a score in our Music Services Department score collection.

11. Hum 2, Maggi Payne
Her own program notes on a piece for trombone and tape written for trombonist Abbie Conant.
http://www.osborne-conant.org/Hum2.htm
Home Bios Music Theater Recordings ... Miscellaneous HUM 2 (2000) for Abbie Conant 7:00 Program notes by Maggi Payne When writing this multi-track work for trombone I could not help but to see the tie-ins to my work of 27 years prior, HUM. That work is scored for one live flutist and six taped flute parts (although it could be performed live with seven performers). HUM 2 is scored for one live trombone plus seven taped parts, although it, too, could be performed live with 8 trombones. The piece deals with expansion/contraction and involves spatial deployment over eight or four speakers. Ideally one should not be able to distinguish the live performer from the taped parts. The piece takes advantage of this surround capability with sounds traveling around, through, and across the space (all built into scoring of the piece), with many instances of extended techniques and delicate pitch alterations (of 2-7 Hz). If the listener is in a good listening position, the space should contract to appear to come very close (as all 8 trombones get very loud) and expand outward (as all 8 trombones get very soft).

CONTENTS
DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
Women Composers Collection (1960-1994; bulk 1985-1993)
Location: M1A, 2, 5-7
8'7" (= 2'2" documents + 85 sound recordings)
Provenance
These materials were collected as a result of a project by the elementary music students of Edward Hines of Wendell, Massachusetts. During the 1993/94 academic year, the music students of Rowe Elementary School of Rowe, Massachusetts, Erving Elementary School of Erving, Massachusetts, and Sunderland Elementary School of Sunderland, Massachusetts wrote to a number of women composers to request scores and recordings of their compositions, as well as information about their lives, work, and musical training. The materials were donated to Sibley Music Library Special Collections in July, 1995.
Scope and Content
The collection contains a number of scores (mostly reproductions from the composers' manuscripts), many with accompanying recordings on tape, compact disc, video tape, or LP. Also included are the composers' biographical materials, resumes, and letters sent in response to the students' questions. In addition to providing access to the music of these composers, the collection offers information about their careers, training, and compositional processes.

County receives 24th budget award ANNOUNCEMENTS Davis Chesterfield County has been chosen by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada to receive its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. "On behalf of the county and my department, I am very pleased that we've been recognized for the 24th year in a row," said Allan Carmody, director of the county's Budget and Management Department. "Developing and managing a $1.1 billion budget requires the collective effort of many people. Everyone works very hard on the budget, and we take our missions to provide financial and organizational information and guidance very seriously. The award recognizes the county's efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout the U.S." The county had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation that are designed to assess how well the budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device. Budget documents must be rated as proficient in all four categories to receive the award. This year, the budget document received increased scores in the following categories: financial plan, operations guide and communication device.
