He was born Michael Schultze , the youngest son of a Lutheran pastor, in Creuzburg Thuringia . After attending school in Torgau and Zerbst , he studied divinity and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) . After receiving his musical education, from 1587 he served as organist at the Marienkirche in Frankfurt. From 1592/3 he served at the court in Wolfenbüttel , under the employ of Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg . He served in the duke's State Orchestra Brunswick first as organist and later (from 1604) as Kapellmeister His first compositions appeared around 1602/3. Praetorius had started writing some of them when Regensburg was the parliamentary seat of the Holy Roman Empire . Their publication primarily reflects the care for music at the court of Gröningen . The motets of this collection were the first in Germany to make use of the new Italian performance practices; as a result, they established him as a proficient composer.

    Michael Praetorius
Kapellmeister in 1603. This post necessitated much travelling in Germany, which enabled him to earn widespread renown as a conductor of musical performances, an organ consultant, and a knowledgeable expert on practical music and on musical instruments. Praetorius was a Lutheran church composer of amazing industry. Dominating his output is the 9-volume Musae Sioniae containing 1,244 chorale settings, but he published many others too, altogether including pieces on every conceivable scale from little bicima to massive Polychoral variations with instrumental support. He also wrote much other liturgical music and a set of 312 dances ( Terpsichore ). His 3-volume treatise Syntagma Musicum (1619) is an invaluable compendium of information on German music, musical instruments and performance, based on what he heard and saw in his travels.

    MICHAEL PRAETORIUS
Church Music Descended from a family of strict Lutheran persuasion, Praetorius based a great deal of his music on Lutheran hymns and on the Latin Lutheran liturgy of the time. His Musae Sioniae, in nine parts, contains a variety of Lutheran church music, polyphonic and homophonic, with a number of works which have become a well enough known part of present choral and hymn repertoire, in particular the familiar carol Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (A Rose has grown), In dulci jubilo and Puer natus in Bethlehem (A Boy is born in Bethlehem). Instrumental Music Instrumental music by Michael Praetorius is confined to his collection of dances, Terpsichore. A set of organ chorales is included in the seventh book of Musae Sioniae. He was organist at the Marienkirche in Frankfurt before working at the court in Wolfenbüttel as organist and (from 1604) Kapellmeister. From 1613 to 1616 he worked at the Saxony court at Dresden, where he was exposed to the latest Italian music, including the Venetian polychoral style works of the Venetian School. His subsequent development of the form of the chorale concerto, particularly the polychoral variety, resulted directly from his familiarity with the music of such Venetians as Giovanni Gabrieli
