    Born: 23-April-1891
    Died: 05-March-1953
Born on 23-April-1891 (11-April-1891 old style) in Sontsovka, Ukraine of the former Russian Empire, Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. He was also an accomplished pianist and conductor. He attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1904 to 1914, winning the Anton Rubinstein prize for best student pianist when he graduated. Like other great composers he mastered a wide range of musical genres, including symphonies, concerti, film music, operas, ballets, and program pieces. At the time, his works were considered both ultra-modern and innovative. He traveled widely, spending many years in Paris and Ettal in the Bavarian Alps, and toured the United States five times. He gained wide notoriety and his music was both reviled and triumphed by the musical press of the time. He returned to his homeland permanently in 1936. He died on 05-March-1953 in Moscow.

In the summer of 1902, he began studying composition with Reinhold GLIERE, and in 1904, enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The premieres of two of his most successful works were held in Chicago in 1921the Third Piano Concerto and the opera Love for Three Oranges, which was commissioned by the Chicago Opera.

    Sergei Prokofieff
    The Fiery Angel
    An Allegorical Lampooning of Stravinsky?
Prokofieff's fantastic opera, The Fiery Angel (1920-26), has intrigued audiences ever since its belated premiere in Venice in 1955, two years after the composer's death. There was a concert performance a year earlier conducted by Charles Bruck, and a recording released in 1956 led by him and featuring most of the cast from that effort. When I finally heard the opera, about twenty years later, courtesy of that pioneering LP set, I was fascinated by the work, despite the screechy, weak monophonic sound and the substitution of the French language for Prokofieff's Russian. Neither did I realize then that I would eventually stumble across a previously unnoticed satiric element in the opera, probably the work's artistic raison d'etre The Firebird avant garde The Firebird The Firebird slightly altered in The Fiery Angel The Firebird and Stravinsky. The Sergei Prokofiev Website "Only Prokofiev's music excites me now...one feels like shouting: More! More!" The Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky commenting upon his newly-found enthusiasm for Prokofiev's music This website is devoted to the great Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev. Herein you will find varied materials related to his life and music. I encourage anyone with an interest in Prokofiev to submit something for possible inclusion on this site. I am looking for off-beat submissions that explore some of the lesser known aspects of Prokofiev's life and work. Also, I don't want to alienate the average music lover by presenting materials that are excessively technical in nature, so hopefully, most of the articles to be found here will be written for the intelligent layman. For those who might consider submitting something, email me and tell me what you are considering, and I'll give you my opinion of the idea. Further, I want this site to be as diverse and wide-ranging as possible in its exploration of Prokofiev's musical world, so I hope to include material on the music of composers who have some kinship with or relevance to Prokofiev's life and art. Again, for anyone interested in contacting me, send email (make sure any email sent contains the word "Prokofiev" somewhere in the subject line of the email) to Bruce at
