23. Adriano Bassi
A short essay by Adriano Bassi on the pleasures of the table and the composer s favorite meals .
http://www.cesil.com/marzo99/pucceng.htm
APRIL 1999 Puccini and the kitchen It is well known that in the classic music world the pleasures of the table have always belonged to the way of life of the most important compositors. Many historical decisions have been traced during lavish meals washed down by a good and full-bodied wine. This is the case of the “ intensive” evening at Milan in an important town hotel between Mascagni and Puccini. A crowning of many years of straits the two musicians must bear during their studies at the Conservatory of Milan, when they lived in the same little room so to save. Getting back to the young years we find Puccini paying attention to the pleasures of the table, even if money lacked. Notwithstanding, the hearty eater got the upper hand, but in an active way, since the compositor amused himself cooking new special meals. All that reflects his active and independent character, a perfect transposition from music to cookery. The meal Puccini loved to cook was the pasta with eels, meeting always with the outstanding success among his friend. In the book by Silvestro Severgnini “Invitation to listen to Puccini” it is highlighted interesting aspects, nice and particular, throwing a new light on his life: “... in the afternoon, when I have money I go to the café, but it passes a lot of evenings I cannot go, since a punch costs 40 cents (...) I do not starve. I eat a little bad, but I stuff myself with minestrone, “thin broth...” The stomach is satisfied “. (1) After years of straits, when this experiences were already a memory, Puccini kept on cooking, these time for amusement, for the noisy group of friends, when he was in the haunting hide at Torre del Lago. There was another meal the musician cooked with pleasure, that is the “herrings with radishes “. It is known he did not lose any opportunity to sit down at table with his friends, eating with gusto and ending with a very good and strong “toscano”, to end the evening perfectly. His most beautiful and meaningful works express

Giacomo Puccini was born on the 23 rd December 1858 and was the fifth of seven children. But although his father died when he was only five years old, he was able to follow in his family's long musical tradition by studying first with his uncle, and then with Carlo Angeloni. His father had been a teacher, church organist, and composer. At ten years of age he joined the choir in his father's old church of San Martino, and by 1873 was playing the organ there, and elsewhere. His first compositions were organ pieces written from his eighteenth year onwards.
in 1876 he made up his mind to break with family tradition and make his future in musical theatre. He said that the occasion had opened up a musical window for him.
By this time he had also begun what became a long love affair with Elvira Gemignani, a married woman whom he finally married on the death of her husband in 1904. She was to outlive him by six years; dying in 1930. They are buried together at Torre del Lago. Verdi' s natural successor.' From then interest in his work became widespread, and the story of his life is largely that of his music and his continuing success although there were a few troubled times.

    Biography
Italian opera composer of bold and dramatic harmonies, creator of the famous "Madame Butterfly" which he composed in 1904. While he seldom pleased the critics of his day, he was enormously popular with the public and his beloved scores lived long after his lifetime. He had an interesting personal style, being fond of hunting, mechanical devices of any kind, collector of cars and motor boats and acquiring houses. His wife, the former Elvira Gemignani, was extremely jealous. She had been his mistress for 20 years while married to another man. He had a son by her in 1886. They married in 1904 after her husband's death but she was said to be a "pathologically invasive woman." In 1908, she accused a housemaid of being Puccini's lover, which eventually drove the woman to suicide. Elvira was jailed for five months and the couple separated, but later reconciled. In late October 1924, Puccini's throat began causing problems. When he sought medical help, it was discovered that he had cancer of the throat with the only hope at the time being radium treatment. On 11/04/1929, he left for treatment in Brussels, taking with him 36 pages of "Turandot," which he was orchestrating. Bleeding on the train from the nose and mouth, he arrived in Brussels where a biopsy confirmed the original diagnosis. On 11/20/1924, Puccini was prepared for surgery to halt the rapidly spreading cancer. The surgery was performed without anesthesia because of his heart. The subsequent radiation proved too much for his weak heart, and he died around 4:00 AM. on 11/29/1924.

Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini (December 22, 1858 – November 29, 1924) was an Italian composer whose operas , including La Bohème Tosca Madama Butterfly , and Turandot , are among the most frequently performed in the history of the genre. Some of his melodies, such as O mio babbino caro from Gianni Schicchi and Nessun Dorma from Turandot , have become standards in common culture. One of the few operatic composers to successfully use both German and Italian techniques of opera, Puccini was, in Italian opera, the only true successor of Giuseppe Verdi After Verdi, the sentimental "realistic" melodrama of the 'verismo' style was introduced in Italy by Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana Rustic Chivalry ) and Ruggiero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci Clowns ). Verismo subsequently gained a near total dominance of the world's opera stages with Puccini's
