It was Mendelssohn who recommended his early piano pieces for publication. In 1845 Liszt found him a job in a music shop, and later with a publisher in Hamburg. In 1850 he went to live with Liszt. In 1856 he gave up his job and went to Wiesbaden to teach piano and write; and in 1877 he was appointed director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt. Psalm CXXI, for soli and chorus

Britannica CD Index Articles Dictionary Help Raff, Joachim, Raff became a schoolteacher in 1840 and taught himself the piano, violin, and composition. After early compositional efforts influenced by Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann, he joined ranks with the new German school of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner, and from 1850 to 1856 he was Liszt's assistant in Weimar. Raff was a piano teacher in Wiesbaden from 1856 to 1877. Composing in almost every genre, Raff was extremely prolific and was commonly regarded by his contemporaries as the peer of Johannes Brahms and Wagner. From 1877 until his death he was the highly esteemed director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt. Raff produced 11 symphonies, concerti for various instruments, operas, choral and chamber music, and piano works. The Leipzig Franz Liszt on June 19, 1845 in Basle, some 80 KM away. Determined to hear F. Liszt F. Liszt �s secretary Belloni noticed the dejected, disappointed Raff and told F. Liszt , who decided not only that Raff should be admitted, but insisted that he should sit on the stage with him amidst a widening pool of water from his wet clothes. Joachim Raff benefited from Franz Liszt 's legendary generosity. His new mentor took him with him on the remainder of his tour through southern Germany and the Rhineland with Raff making the concert arrangements. When the tour ended, F. Liszt F. Mendelssohn whilst there and also acted as music critic for the journal Caecilia, Raff soon got embroiled in controversy and had to leave after he wrote a contentious article in the Wiener allgemeine Musik-Franz LisztZeitung . Don't hesitate if your taste is for the romantic violin concerto in the heritage of Bruch, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky" MusicWeb (Rob Barnett) From Raff.org , the leading site dedicated to the music and life of the composer "This, the first of Raff's full concertos was dedicated to the great virtuoso Wilhelmj who premiered it in August 1871. It had been begun a year earlier. Partly though Wilhelmj's championing, the work became popular throughout the last quarter of the 19th. century. Although of only around 30 minutes duration it has the expansive and confident air typical of Raff at the zenith of his career. The opening Allegro patetico is a very substantial movement by the standards of the day and is characterised by a lyrical and defiant spirit. The extended, faintly melancholy Andante non troppo slow movement follows without a break, as does the brief but brilliant concluding Allegro trionfale, whose martial character is probably assocaited with Raff's feeling of national pride after the Franco-Prussian war. Further women were to be appointed two years later, and there was a class for women composers, the first of its kind in Germany. Raff remained in Frankfurt until his death in 1882.
