Saint-Saëns was born in Paris, France on 9 October 1835. His father, a government clerk, died three months after his birth. He was raised by his mother, Clémence, with the assistance of her aunt, Charlotte Masson, who moved in. Masson introduced Saint-Saëns to the piano , and began giving him lessons on the instrument. At about this time, age two, Saint-Saëns was found to possess perfect pitch . His first composition, a little piece for the piano dated 22 March 1839, is now kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France . Saint-Saëns's precociousness was not limited to music. He learned to read and write by age three, and had some mastery of

He composed over 300 works comprised of operas , symphonies, oratorios cantatas , and piano concertos . His long life spanned nearly the entire duration of the Romantic period of music. He was part of the heyday of the movement and witnessed its death and the dawn of 20th-century music. He was the first musician to compose for the cinema. Camille Saint-Saëns's sensitive renderings of using instruments to tell a story or suggestively act out a scene helped to glorify the concept of "program music." He is best known for his orchestral work The Carnival of the Animals. Program music was very aligned with poetry and literature where artists hoped for a "unification of the arts." It is said that poets wanted poetry to be music , and musicians wanted their music to be poetry.

Saint-Sans, Camille
Paris 1835 - Algeri 1921
Biography
Once described as the French Mendelssohn, Saint-Sans was a talented and precocious child, with interests by no means confined to music. He made an early impression as a pianist. Following established French tradition, he was for nearly twenty years organist at the Madeleine in Paris and taught at the Ecole Niedermeyer, where he befriended his pupil Gabriel Faur. Prolific and versatile as a composer, by the time of his death in 1921 his popularity in France had diminished very considerably, as fashions in music changed. Operas
The best known of the thirteen operas completed by Saint-Sans is Samson et Dalila, a romantic treatment of the biblical story. Vocal and Choral Music
Saint-Sans wrote a number of sacred and secular Choral music and made a considerable contribution to the body of French solo song. Orchestral Music
The third of the three numbered symphonies of Saint-Sans, the so-called Organ Symphony, so named from the use of the instrument in the work, is the best known. Other popular Orchestral music include Le Rouet d'Omphale (Omphale's Wheel) and Danse macabre.
