Part One "The scoop"
During the period when the film was on everybody's mind (Tous les Matins..., remember), Pierre Guillot, a musicologist and professor at the Sorbonne here in Paris, published an article on the first page of Le Monde claiming that he had discovered Sainte Colombe's identity. His real name, according to Guillot, was Augustin D'Autrecourt, and he lived in Lyons in the 1650's. Shortly after the article appeared I was asked to revise Paul Hooreman's 1973 edition of the Concerts à Deux Violes Esgales by Sainte Colombe (at least five mistakes per page, but considering the date, not bad). I needed to revise the introduction, and took up on the Lyons trail. There was indeed a teacher living in Lyons in the 1650's, but subsequent research indicated many suspect things.
Pierre Guillot apparently depended on secondary sources, books of hospital archival material printed in the 19th century and available in any of the local archives in France. Though he claimed D'Autrecourt was paid more than his fellow musicians at the Hospice de la Charité in Lyons, he was in fact paid exactly the same as all the others. He was likewise mistaken about D'Autrecourt's name (not his fault; the hospital archivist in the 17th century made the mistake). Not knowing the viol's history, he did not know that Sainte-Colombe had studied the viol with Nicolas Hotman; we know this from Sainte Colombe's student, Jean Rousseau (Hotman died in 1663).
Jean de Sainte Colombe lived near the Louvre in the 1650's and 1660's (see map on page x). His home was on the Rue de Betizy which intersects the Rue de la Monnaie and the Rue Bertin Poirée, curiously enough two of the first addresses of the young Marin Marais. In the late 1650's the houses on the Rue de Betizy (now the rue de Rivoli) had large courtyards, as so many Parisian houses do today, with ample space for a hut for practicing purposes. Moreover the Rue Saint Germain l'Auxerrois was one street over. This was the famous violist DuBuisson's street: I discovered that his name was actually Jean Lacquement-dict Dubuisson.

30. Tous Les Matins Du Monde
Sainte Colombe was actually Marais' teacher; but when he realized after six months that his pupil could surpass him, he told him that he had nothing more to show him.

Tous les matins du monde
This movie, released in 1991 in France and in 1992 in the US, is the result of a collaboration between a novelist, Pascal Quignard , a director Alain Corneau , and a musician, Jordi Savall . Corneau wanted to do a movie on music and the 17th century; he met Quignard, who had already written about the viol, and suggested that they do the story of Marin Marais (1656-1728), one of the best viol players and composers of the time, and his teacher Sainte Colombe. Quignard had discovered the music of Sainte Colombe through a recording made by Jordi Savall in 1976. Quignard wrote the book, Corneau took the book and worked with Quignard and Savall to make the movie. Savall plays the music on the soundtrack The subject of the movie is the life of the French viol player and composer Sainte-Colombe. What little evidence there is on his life was woven into a fictional narrative by Pascal Quignard in a novel written specifically for this project. He then adapted his own novel for the screen, in collaboration with Corneau and with advice from Savall. The title comes from a sentence in the novel: "Tous les matins du monde sont sans retour," meaning literally "all the mornings of the world [leave] without [ever] returning." It can be translated as "Each day dawns but once."

Sainte-Colombe gave concerts with his daughters, which delighted European audiences. In this tradition, Mary Springfels and Wendy Gillespie formed the ensemble to perform some of the most vital and imaginative string ensemble music ever composed. The ensemble, who are well known performers individually as soloists and as members of various ensembes, are often joined by distinguished guest artists perfoming on harpsichord, organ, lute or voice. The group has given concerts throughout the USA and Europe with the goal of delighting audiences as did the original daughters of Sainte Colombe.

Château Sainte Colombe
Côtes de Castillon (Bordeaux)
The Estate
The wine is produced by Vignobles Perse that also owns the famous Château Pavie in Saint Emilion. The average annual production for Sainte Colombe is 16,500 cases.
The Vineyard
The vineyard measure 40 hectares total (98.80 acres) and the average age of the vines is 37 years old. The Sainte Colombe plateau is the highest point in the Côtes de Castillon Appellation.
The vines enjoy good quality clay-limestone soil, optimum southern-facing sun exposure, excellent natural drainage due to its position on a slope, healthy water regime thanks to a limestone substrate, and early ripening thanks to white clay soil which retains warmth remarkably well.
Green harvesting, with an initial leaf thinning on the eastern side of the vines in late June and a second in mid-August on the western side.

Back
Sieur de Sainte Colombe Few figures in French musical history are more enigmatic than Sieur de Sainte Colombe. There is no record of his dates of birth or death (1640?-1700?). We do not even know his Christian name. There is some evidence to suggest that he lived in Paris, and he is accounted, on somewhat firmer grounds, among the foremost bass viol players of the late 17th century. Music scholars usually refer to three successive generations of French viol player-composers. We learn from contemporary reviews that Sainte Colombe belonged to the second, that his teacher was Nicholas Hotman and that he numbered Marin Marais and Jean Rousseau among his pupils. He also appears to have been a successful innovator. In his , an important treatise on the viol published in 1687 and dedicated to his master, Jean Rousseau writes: " ... we owe to him this beautiful port de main [fingering technique] which brought viol playing to perfection [and] allowed him to imitate the greatest qualities of the human voice ...; we also owe to M. de Sainte Colombe the 7th string which he added to the viol. Finally, he ... introduced the use of silver-spun strings in France, and he continually works to find anything to improve this instrument, if it were possible. Writing in the early 18th century - a generation later - the historian Titon du Tillet relates in his book that Sainte Colombe gave private concerts in his house, in which two of his daughters played: "one the treble viol, the other the bass, forming with their father a three viol consort, which was a pleasure to listen to." From the same book comes the engaging story of the cabin in the mulberry tree, where Sainte Colombe had retired to play the viol "

Review
First released on LP in 1976, then re-released on CD in 1988, and then re-released on CD in 2002, Jordi Savall and Wieland Kuijken 's recording of five of the Concerts à deux violes esgales du sieur de Sainte-Columbe has been continuously available for more than a quarter of a century. May it always be so: in the world of the doleful and sorrowful, no composer has so successfully plumbed the depths of despair like the mysterious Sainte-Colombe. Although as this disc reveals, Sainte-Colombe was also capable of lightness and even wit, his most characteristic pieces are those in which the dark night of the soul is illuminated with unrelieved intensity. And no pair of basse de viole players have so successfully plumbed the depths of Sainte-Colombe's music like Savall and Kuijken. On this disc, they prove themselves as capable in the lighter works as the darker works, dancing with joy in the gigues of "La Dubois" and sarabande gaye of "Bourrasque" and sighing with sorrow in "Les pleurs" and "Quarillon of the Tombeau les Regrets." The stereo sound of the LP was warm and rich, and the remastered sound of the CD is even warmer and richer. May this disc always be available. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
