From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Portrait of Salieri by Joseph Willibrod Mähler Antonio Salieri (18 August 1750 - 7 May 1825) was an Italian classical composer conductor and teacher born in the Republic of Venice , but who spent his adult life and career as a faithful subject of the Habsburg Monarchy. Salieri was a pivotal figure in the development of late 18th century opera . As a student of Florian Leopold Gassmann , and a protege of Gluck , Salieri was a cosmopolitan composer who wrote operas in three languages. Salieri helped to develop and shape many of the features of operatic compositional vocabulary and his music was a powerful influence on contemporary composers. Appointed the director of the Italian opera by the Habsburg court, a post he held from 1774 to 1792, Salieri dominated Italian language opera in Vienna . During his career he also spent time writing works for opera houses in Venice, Rome, and Paris. His dramatic works were widely performed throughout Europe during his life time. As the Austrian imperial Kapellmeister from 1788 to 1824, he was responsible for music at the court chapel and attached school. Even as his works dropped from performance, and he wrote no new operas after 1804, he still remained one of the most important and sought after teachers of his generation and his influence was felt in every aspect of Vienna's musical life.

Other Information:

Salieri gave music lessons to such high-profile composers as Beethoven, Schubert, and Liszt. He was a fine composer and was unjustly maligned by the movie "Amadeus." The film implies that Salieri caused Mozart's death because he envied Mozart's talent. That is not the case. Mozart died of rheumatic inflammatory fever. The two composers enjoyed a good professional relationship by all accounts.

ANTONIO SALIERI
Thanks to Pushkin and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as Shaffer and the film Amadeus, Salieri has been cast as the villain in the tragedy of Mozart's early death. Antonio Salieri occupied a position of great importance in the music of Vienna. From 1774 he was court composer and conductor of the Italian opera, serving as court Kapellmeister from 1788 until 1824. Born in Legnago, he was brought as a boy to Vienna by Florian Gassmann, his predecessor as court Kapellmeister who supervised his musical training and education. He owed much to the influence and patronage of Gluck, to whom he seemed a natural successor in the field of opera. He won similar success to the latter also in Paris with his operas for the French stage. His pupils included Beethoven and Schubert, Czerny, Hummel, Moscheles and one of Mozart's sons. He was a prolific composer, principally in vocal music of all kinds. Operas Vocal and Choral Music Salieri wrote a quantity of church music, as well as oratorios. He left still more secular vocal music, ranging from cantatas and choruses to duets and solo arias.

Biography
Italian composer; he was brought to Vienna as a boy and lived most of his life there; he died there on May 7, 1825 in Vienna, Austria. A protégé of Gluck, he counted Ludwig Beethoven and Franz Schubert among his pupils and he wrote several Italian operas, including "Falstaff," several Masses, a "Passion" oratorio in Italian, piano concertos, and more. His best-known work was the French opera Tarare (1787), translated into Italian as Axur, re d'Ormus, which the Viennese public preferred to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni. Salieri's last opera was performed in 1804, and he then devoted himself to composing sacred music. From 1774 he was court composer and conductor of the Italian opera, serving as court Kapellmeister from 1788 until 1824. He was one of the founders of the Academy of Music in Vienna (1817).
