Later, he also referred to himself as a "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures sounds") preferring this designation to that of a" musician ", after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911. In addition to his body of music, Satie also left a remarkable set of writings, having contributed work for a range of publications, from the dadaist to the American top culture chronicle Vanity Fair . Although in later life he prided himself on always publishing his work under his own name, in the late nineteenth century he appears to have used

Erik Satie (1866 - 1925)
In the minds of some observers, Erik Satie was simply an eccentric composer of weird little ditties. True, his early musical education was unsatisfactory, and most of his works were miniatures for the piano which seemed very much to defy any of the expected conventions of music. Yet he should not be dismissed too hastily, because his ideas were to have a profound influence on many musical developments over a broad timespan. Foremost amongst those composers influenced by Satie was his contemporary Debussy , the later French composer Ravel, and Stravinsky. In his 40s, Satie made up for his earlier lack of dedication at the Paris Conservatory when he decided to study with d'Indy and Roussel, passing these exams with distinction. Nevertheless he was always well acquainted with the music of composers past and present, and did not like the large scale Romantic trends led by Wagner . For a while he earned a living playing the piano and accordion in bars and cafes in Montmartre, where he also wrote a number of popular songs. The picture we have of Satie the man is as someone who was pointedly independent, rebellious, even ruthless and scathing. He observed life with a wit frequently thick with satire and parody, yet underlying this he appeared to have a philosophical, deeply spiritual side. He became something of a celebrity among other composers, notably Debussy and "Les Six" (including

14. Erik Satie (1866-1925) Biography
Erik Alfred Leslie Satie (1866-1925); born May 17, 1866 in Honfleur, Basse-Normandie, France Erik Satie was a music composer, and a performing pianist, though mainly for caf- and cabaret audiences. Satie wrote theatre and ballet music, as well as piano music. His compositions are original, humorous, often bizarre, and very minimalistic. His music is sometimes called furniture music , supposed to be in the background of everyday life. It is evidently anti-romantic and also anti-impressionistic. Satie eventually became a leading figure of the French avant-garde . He did not begin to be taken seriously as a composer by his contemporaries until he was in his forties. In 1917 the first performance in Paris of the ballet Parade (the orchestration of which included parts for typewriter, foghorn and rattle) caused a scandal, which established his name as a composer. Satie wrote this ballet together with Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso for the Russian impresario Diaghilev , leader of the Ballets Russes . His other works include: Trois Gymnopdies (1888), piano;
