Biography
French composer and pianist whose bold harmonics were studied by other composers. His work influenced the group of young composers known as "Les Six." As a cafe pianist in Paris, he gained a reputation for his wit, criticism and eccentricity. He studied only one year at the Paris Conservatoire, then started his café pianist work and returned to serious study in 1905 at the Schola Cantorum. Satie, along with Jean Cocteau and Picasso, produced a shocking ballet, "Parade," in 1917. Among his other works are two ballets, the piano suite, "Gymnopedies" in 1888, four sopranos, chamber orchestra and numerous piano pieces. Satie died of liver failure due to alcohol abuse on 7/01/1925, Paris, France.

Satie, Erik
Satie, Erik
The French composer Erik Satie was born on May 17, 1866, and died on
July 1, 1925, was the son of an English mother and a Parisian music publisher.
He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1879 but failed to benefit from
academic education, which he embarked on again only in his 40th year, when he
enrolled as a pupil of Vincent d'Indy and Albert Roussel at the Schola Cantorum.
Long before that, however, he had composed a number of short piano pieces, whose
eccentric titles and unfashionable and yet convincing simplicity of melody were
matched by an individual sense of harmony. It is still a moot point whether

Eric Alfred Leslie Satie (Honfleur, May 17, 1866 – Paris, July 1, 1925) was a French composer, pianist, and writer. Dating from his first composition in 1884, he signed his name as Erik Satie , as he said he preferred it. He wrote articles for several periodicals and, although in later life he prided himself on always publishing his work under his own name, there appears to have been a brief period in the late 1880s during which he published articles under the pseudonym, Virginie Lebeau Satie introduced himself as a "gymnopedist" from 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. He also referred to himself as a "phonometrograph" or "phonometrician," meaning "someone who measures and writes down sounds" — he preferred this definition of his profession to "musician," after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers in 1911. Some view him as a serial precursor, being ahead of many twentieth century avant-garde artistic ideas. It is possible that, due to his religious nature and interests; serious and witty at turns, a heart-broken and hermit-like existence, his work attained that intense purity and child-like simplicity that reverberates in the listener.
