Scarlatti, Domenico,
in full GIUSEPPE DOMENICO SCARLATTI (b. Oct. 26, 1685, Naples [Italy]d. July 23, 1757, Madrid, Spain), Italian composer noted particularly for his 555 keyboard sonatas , which substantially expanded the technical and musical possibilities of the harpsichord.
Early life and vocal works: Italy.
Domenico, the son of the famous composer of vocal music Alessandro Scarlatti , was born in the same year as J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel. He began the first half of his career at the age of 16 with the production in Naples in 1703 of his first operas, Ottavia restituita al trono and Il Giustino. In 1705 his father sent him away from Naples to Venice, reputedly to study with the composer Francesco Gasparini. While in Venice, Scarlatti met a young Irishman, Thomas Roseingrave, who many years later described Domenico's harpsichord playing to the English musicologist Charles Burney as sounding as if "ten hundred d. . . .s had been at the instrument; he had never heard such passages of execution and effect before." Scarlatti also formed a friendship with Handel while in Venice.

d Madrid, 23 July 1757, aged seventy-one
He studied first with his father Alessandro, then in 1701 became organist and composer at the royal chapel in Naples. In 1708 he went to Venice for further study and became a firm friend of Handel there. In 1709 he entered the service of the Queen of Poland in Rome. In 1714 he became maestro di cappella to the Portuguese Ambassador and, in 1715, was also maestro of the Cappella Giuliana in the Vatican. He resigned in 1719, and in 1720 or 1721 became maestro at the royal chapel in Lisbon. He returned to Italy in 1724, then moved to Madrid in 1729, where he spent his remaining years as music-master to the Queen of Spain. For his long services to the Spanish royal family he received a Spanish knighthood in 1738. More than half of his numerous harpsichord sonatas were composed during the last six years of his life.

Domenico Scarlatti
Like his father, Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (October 26, 1685 - July 23, 1757) was a well-trained and professional composer able to write successfully for a number of genres. Unlike his father, he found the keyboard composition sufficiently challenging and inspirational for him to be content for supplying his patroness with over 500 such works, a project which fully occupied his last two decades. These extraordinary works form the basis of his present-day fame. Domenico Scarlatti brought an original compositional approach to his harpsichord works, which stand at the center of his artistic achievement. Apart from technical advances, such as the novel idea of crossing the hands on the keyboard which was to be taken up by piano composers such as

Domenico Scarlatti 1685-1757
Almost an exact contemporary of J. S. Bach, Domenico studied with his father Alessandro , and Gasparini. Domenico's employment took him to royal courts and chapels in Naples (1701), Rome (1709), Lisbon (1720) and Spain (1729). In 1708 Handel met Domenico in Italy and the two traveled together to Rome where Cardinal Ottoboni arranged a friendly competition. With respect to the harpsichord it was ruled that the two were equal, but, on the organ, Domenico quickly acknowledged his rival's superiority. The two remained good friends until Domenico's death. Scarlatti was the first composer to explore the free style of playing the harpsichord (he composed over 600 sonatas for that instrument); in addition, he wrote operas oratorios cantatas , and other sacred works.

Scarlatti, Domenico
Sonatas.
Of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas, about 10 are for violin and continuo, 3 are specifically for organ, and the rest are for harpsichord. Scarlatti's most mature period and largest output (350 sonatas) was concentrated in the years between 1753, when he was 67, and his death four years later. A consistent development is perceptible in his harpsichord music, essentially characterized by an expansion of simple binary dance form through elaborations of thematic organization and extensions of tonal range. Spectacular innovations in keyboard virtuosityincluding hand crossingare often accompanied by audacious dissonances, unconventional voice leading, and far-flung modulations. The predominance of fast movements in the earlier sonatas gives way to a greater frequency of slow movements in the middle period, to a wider range of lyricism, and in the later sonatas to a leaner, more concentrated style. Although a few of the early sonatas, such as those for violin, consist of up to four movements, the bulk are single movements, normally in two sections. At least 388, however, were apparently composed as sonata pairs, either in the same key or related keys, and represent, in effect, 194 two-movement sonatas. These either contrast slow movements with fast ones, couple complementary fast movements, or extend the total tonal range of a pair conceived as a unit. There are also at least a dozen sonatas arranged in triptychs.
