March 30, 1654, Halle), organist and composer who, with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck , influenced the Baroque organ style of northern Germany. Scheidt studied with Sweelinck in Amsterdam and in 1609 became organist at the Church of St. Maurice (Moritzkirche) in Halle. About 1619 he became organist, and later chapelmaster, to the Margrave of Brandenburg. He was esteemed as a teacher, and his pupils included the composer Adam Krieger. Scheidt's first published works included sacred vocal music, notably Cantiones sacrae (1620) for eight voices, and four books of Geistliche Concerten (1631-40) for two to four voices and continuo. The publication of his Tabulatura nova (three parts, 1624) was an important event in the history of organ music. The title refers to the musical notation used: keyboard tablature in the Italian sense ( i.e., staff notation, rather than the alphabetical tablature used in earlier German organ music). The collection contains fantasias, toccatas, "echo pieces," organ responses for liturgical use, and, most important, variations on chorale melodies. Scheidt's subjection of the chorale melody to musical variations and his use of different combinations of voices and instruments in the different stanzas foreshadowed the later Lutheran cantatas based on chorales. Scheidt's work, though influenced by Sweelinck, shows his own skill in counterpoint. His

Otto's Baroque Musick Tuesday, January 12, 2010 Scheidt, Samuel - Concertus Sacri - Dresdner Kreuzchor, Flamig Scheidt, Samuel - Concertus Sacri - Dresdner Kreuzchor, Flamig Samuel Scheidt, one of the most important German composers of the 17th century, is best-known for his many organ works. Yet he also composed a sizeable number of sacred vocal works, which are closely related to liturgical practices in Halle, where Scheidt spent most of his life. Scheidt's music is surprising, when compared to that of his contemporaries. While firmly rooted in the German motet form, which was predominant at the time, it also features a variety of elements from the then-new Italian style. The standard vocal concerto form is respected, yet the influence of the Italian madrigal give them tone colours and rhythms that are totally unexpected. In the Concertus XII, for example, there is a sharp contrast between the brief sections sung in plainchant, which act as a kind of recitative, and the longer concerto sections, with soloists and choruses flying around ecstatically over a rich instrumental accompaniment. The instrumentation is also much more complex than many of his contemporaries - Scheidt uses a wide variety of instruments, which give his music a unique texture. Concertus V features a group of viola da gambas, providing an interesting tone, together with flutes. Concertus XII is a simpler work, relying on the choir for a large share of the music, with only an organ, gamba and violone providing continuo. The starkness of the instrumental accompaniment here is in sharp contrast with the richness of the vocal colours.
