JOHANN HERMANN SCHEIN
In 1616 the German composer and poet Johann Hermann Schein was appointed Thomaskantor in Leipzig, a position later held by Bach. His importance as a composer lies in the use he made of Italian monody and concerted style in Lutheran church music. Church Music Schein, primarily a vocal composer, wrote extensively for the church. Secular Vocal Music Schein wrote a number of madrigals and music suitable for either instruments or voices, again demonstrating Italian influence. Ensemble Music Schein's compositions also include some twenty Suites for instrumental ensemble.

(b Schein's father, a teacher and pastor, died when the boy was seven, and the family moved from rural Grunhain back to Dresden, its former home. At 13, he was a soprano in the chapel choir of the court at Dresden and studied under the kapellmeister there. He was an apt scholar. In 1603 he studied briefly at the University of Leipzig and then was accepted into the Schupforta near Naumburg, where he studied music and the humanities for four years. Schein returned to the University of Leipzig for another four years, studying law and the liberal arts. His musical abilities were evident throughout his studies, and by 1615 he was kapellmeister at Weimar. The following year he won the valued position of cantor at the Church of St. Thomas in Leipzig, a post that Johann Sebastian Bach occupied more than a century later. Schein was required to direct choral music at two churches and to teach Latin and music for some 14 hours a week. Cantional oder Gesangbuch Augburgischer Konfession (1627) contains about 200 harmonized chorales, in which about 80 of the melodies are his. The

The Allemande or Deutschen originated in Germany in the early 16th century, then on to France where it entered Paris through Alsac, then the Rhineland, while there, it was polished up, and finally arrived in England. It was danced also in Spain and in Switzerland , but specially in Swabia to the sound of the tambourine. It is related to its ancestor the La Danse Basses and Hautes dances of the sixteenth century. Some writings have also called it the Allewander ( Swiss ). The Allemande is said to have been adopted at the court of Louis XIV as kind of a trophy from the annexation of Alsace. Louis XIV , Napolean and Queen Elizabeth found great favor in this dance. It did not reach its peak till much later. The dance is considered a gesture type - chain dance with graceful arms while moving as a chain and became very popular in 1600. It could be danced by a couple or group.
