Schmidt, Franz
Franz Schmidt (born Pressburg [Bratislava], Dec 22, 1874; died Perchtoldsdorf, Feb 11, 1939), Austrian composer, pianist, cellist, and conductor. Schmidt studied piano with Leschetizky; he then studied music theory with Robert Fuchs and cello with Udel and Hellmesberger at the Vienna Conservatory. He himself taught music theory, composition, piano, and cello at the Conservatory, later Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst from 1902 to 1937, being heavily involved in the transformation of the Akademie into a Hochschule in 1924, and serving as the latter institution's Director 1925-27, then succeeding Josef Marx as its Rector 1927-30. As a composer, he wrote two operas, Notre Dame (1904) and Friedigundis (1921), the oratorio Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln (1937), four symphonies, two piano concertos, and much chamber music and organ music. Among his many writings is Die Fachhochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst und ihre Entwicklung , unpublished (1928), which is printed in Carl Nemeth, Franz Schmidt (Vienna: Amalthea, 1957).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article is about the executioner. For the musician, see Franz Schmidt Franz Schmidt (born ca. 1550; died 1635), also known as Meister Franz , was executioner in the region of Bamberg from 1573 to April 1578, and from 1 May 1578 till the end of 1617 executioner of Nuremberg In 1617, he resigned from his post. This removed from him the social stigma of being “unehrlich” ( dishonest or disrespectable ) which applied at that time to executioners, prostitutes, and beggars (but also to millers, shepherds, and actors), including their families, preventing them from e.g. entering a guild or receiving an “honest” burial. His journal of punishments executed by him has survived and contains 361 executions and 345 minor punishments (floggings, ears or fingers cut off). The individual entries contain date, place, and method of execution, name, origin, and station in life of the condemned and – in later years more verbose than in the earlier ones – details of the crimes on which the sentence was based. Meister Franz executed criminals by rope, sword

Franz Schmidt
Far better known within Austria than outside it, Franz Schmidt (December 22, 1874 - February 11, 1939) has long been regarded by his countrymen as Bruckner's natural successor. Hungarian was his family's first language, and his music is marked by traces of Hungarian music, particularly as filtered through Liszt and Brahms . A prodigiously musical child, he became adept on piano, cello, and later organ. He first established himself as a cellist in the Vienna Philharmonic. He was considered a great chamber musician and played with the leading ensembles of his day. As a composer, he studied with nobody special, although Bruckner was his counterpoint teacher, and his own composition pedagogy landed no remarkable students. Naturally gifted to an astonishing extent, he achieved a personal synthesis of the Austro-Germanic symphonic tradition. Vienna honored him accordingly.

Biografia
Franz Schmidt (22 December 1874 – 11 February 1939) was an Austrian composer, cellist and pianist of Hungarian descent and origin.
Life
Schmidt was born in Pozsony, Kingdom of Hungary, Austro-Hungarian Empire, since 1920 Bratislava, Slovakia. His father was half Hungarian and his mother entirely Hungarian. He was a Roman Catholic.
His earliest teacher was his mother, Mária Ravasz, an accomplished pianist, who gave him a systematic instruction in the keyboard works of J. S. Bach. He received a thorough foundation in theory from Brother Felizian Moczik, the outstanding organist at the Franciscan church in Pressburg. He studied piano briefly with Theodor Leschetizky, with whom he clashed. He moved to Vienna with his family in 1888, and studied at the Vienna Conservatory (composition with Robert Fuchs, cello with Ferdinand Hellmesberger and theory (the counterpoint class) with Anton Bruckner), graduating "with excellence" in 1896.
He beat 13 other applicants and obtained a post as cellist with the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra, where he played until 1914, often under Gustav Mahler. Mahler habitually had Schmidt play all the cello solos, even though Friedrich Buxbaum was the principal cellist. Schmidt was also in demand as a chamber musician. Schmidt and Arnold Schoenberg maintained cordial relations despite their vast differences in style. Also a brilliant pianist, in 1914 Schmidt took up a professorship in piano at the Vienna Conservatory, which had been recently renamed Imperial Academy of Music and the Performing Arts. (Apparently, when asked who the greatest living pianist was, Leopold Godowsky replied, "The other one is Franz Schmidt.") In 1925 he became Director of the Academy, and from 1927 to 1931 its Rector.
