Schreker, Franz
Schreker, Franz (born Monaco, March 23, 1878; died Berlin, March 21, 1934), Austrian composer, conductor, composition teacher, and music educator. Schreker studied violin (Bachrich and Rosé) and composition (Fuchs) at the Vienna Conservatory (1892-1900). Having established himself as a conductor and achieved success as a composer, especially with the sensational premiere of his opera Der ferne Klang in 1910, he taught music theory and composition at the Vienna Conservatory 1912-20, and was then appointed Director of the Berlin Hochschule für Musik in 1920, holding that post until, as a Jew, he was removed by the Nazi regime in 1932. He was a distinguished and highly influential composition teacher, his pupils including Berthold Goldschmidt, Alois Hába, and Ernst Krenek. His musical style was characterized by "aesthetic plurality (a mixture of Romanticism, naturalism, symbolism, Impressionism, Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit)" (C. Hailey, ), as well as by sensitive use of tone-color. He composed orchestral works (notably his

Franz Schreker (1878 - 1934)
Introduction
For a long time it appeared as if Franz Schreker had disappeared from general musical consciousness. Together with Korngold Zemlinsky , Schulhoff and Viktor Ullmann, the composer who perished in Auschwitz, he belonged to the part of the Western musical scene which during the Nazi period was stigmatised as being degenerate and subsequently destroyed. Gradually, however, Franz Schreker and his works are gradually returning into the public eye: justifiably so, as there is a great deal of interest to be (re)discovered.
Biography
Schreker's biography was equally moulded by the great successes during his lifetime (he was for a certain time world famous and the only musical dramatist whose operas could easily hold their own ground against those of Richard Strauss) and also the inglorious end to his career precipitated by the social and political situation, causing both the composer and his works to fall swiftly and permanently into oblivion. Franz Schreker, about 1912

Biographie - Werk - Selbstzeugnisse

FRANZ SCHREKER
Trained as a violinist and as a composer at the Vienna Conservatory, Franz Schreker belongs to that group of composers whose careers were eclipsed by the events of 1933 in Germany. Schreker enjoyed very considerable success as a composer of opera, in a style that couples the late Romantic with an element of musical collage, presenting scenes where different layers of music are juxtaposed or superimposed, all with a mastery of orchestral colour. Stage Works Schreker won early success with Der Geburtstag der Infantin Der ferne Klang Der ferne Klang influenced Alban Berg, who made a vocal score of the work. Of other operas, Die Gezeichneten Der ferne Klang Orchestral Music Schreker wrote a relatively small amount of purely orchestral music, although orchestral excerpts from his operas are sometimes heard in the concert hall.
