b Monaco, 23 March 1878
d Berlin, 21 March 1934, aged fifty-five
He studied violin and composition from 1892 to 1900 at the Vienna Conservatory. He achieved his first success in 1908 with a ballet, and in that same year founded the Philharmonic Choir, which he conducted until 1920. In 1912 he was appointed to teach composition at the Vienna Akademie fur Musik, and in 1920 was made director of the Berlin Hochschule, staying there until 1932. He was dismissed from this post in 1932 and took over a master-class in composition at the Prussian Academy of Arts, from which he was also dismissed in 1933. The shock caused a fatal heart attack. From http://www.grovemusic.com Schreker, Franz (August Julius) (b Monaco, 23 March 1878; d Berlin, 21 March 1934). Austrian composer, teacher, conductor and administrator. He is a central figure in that remarkable flowering of opera in Austria that included the works of Zemlinsky, Berg and Korngold. Integrating his aesthetic plurality (a mixture of Romanticism, naturalism, symbolism, Impressionism, Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit), timbral experimentation, strategies of extended tonality and conception of total music theatre into the narrative of 20th-century music has contributed to a more differentiated understanding of central European modernism.

Christophorus, oder die Vision einer Oper is a Zeitoper that parodies contemporary styles, including jazz, the popular chanson, Neue Sachlichkeit and the radical avant garde. It is at the same time a deeply felt document of Schrekers own struggles with his times. Dedicated to Schoenberg, the score contains Schrekers most advanced harmonic language alongside passages of diatonic and modal harmony, broad cantilenas alongside spoken dialogue and Sprechgesang. The complexity of the works dramaturgy, in which vision and reality intertwine, invites comparison with the most advanced constructions of contemporary film and theatre. The dramaturgy of Der singende Teufel, by contrast, is far more traditional, but its brooding, medieval setting inspired an austerely archaic musical language that ranges from simple modal counterpoint and sharp timbral detail to massed, clustered effects for the full orchestra.

Franz Schreker, circa 1930. With permission of the Franz Schreker Foundation
In recent decades there has been a revived interest in musicians suppressed by the Third Reich. One of the most striking of these losses to music history was the Austrian-Jewish composer Franz Schreker. Neither an experimental modernist like Schoenberg nor a committed leftist like Kurt Weill , Schreker was considered by some to be one of the most promising twentieth-century composers. In the eight years between the peak of his popularity in 1924 and his forced resignation in 1932, however, the Nazis managed to ensure the almost total disappearance of his music from the public consciousness, not just within the Reich but throughout the world. The toast of German opera in the early Weimar years, Franz Schreker was born in 1878. His family travelled around much of Europe before his father died suddenly in Linz in 1888, after which they moved to Vienna. As a young aspiring musician, Schreker worked at various odd jobs to help care for his mother and three siblings, before being awarded a scholarship to the Vienna conservatory in 1892, where he studied violin and composition. Schreker gradually built a reputation as one of the most talented young artists of turn-of-the-century Europe. In 1909 he married the soprano Maria Binder, who subsequently sang in several leading roles in his productions. During these years he produced several sets of songs and pieces of symphonic music. However, it was as an opera composer that he was to make his name. One of his earliest works – a one-act opera titled
