Of Reminiscences and Reflections (1994) - Pulitzer Prize
Other Information: This biography is courtesy of GM Recordings. Thanks to Scott Menhinick. Born in 1925 on the Day of St. Cecilia, the Patron Saint of music, Gunther Schuller is now one of the elder statesmen of both post-war jazz musicians and 20th Century American composers. An inaugural member of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and winner of the DownBeat Lifetime Achievement Award, his careers as composer, conductor, educator, historian, and music advocate have each changed the face of contemporary music. Schuller's musical odyssey began in 1942 with Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony when he was chosen as an extra French horn player for the maestro's American premiere of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7. After six months with the American Ballet Theater Orchestra in 1943 , under Antal Dorati, Schuller was named principal French horn of the Cincinnati Symphony. It was in Cincinnati that Schuller would first meet Duke Ellington and recognize the compositional potential of jazz. His work as an educator, at institutions like the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, and the landmark Lenox School of Jazz, culminated in ten years as President of Boston's New England Conservatory (1967-77). He used this position, and his nearly twenty-five year stint at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, to legitimize jazz as a serious music and generate interest in ragtime, classic jazz, and contemporary classical music.

Schuller, Gunther
(b . Nov. 22, 1925, New York City), American composer and performer noted for his wide range of activity in both jazz and classical music and for his works embracing both jazz and advanced 12-tone elements ( i.e., deriving melodies and harmonies of a composition from an arbitrary ordering of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale). Schuller was born into a family of musicians. His grandfather was a conductor in Germany, and his father was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic for 41 years. Though largely self-taught, Schuller became a virtuoso French hornist, playing with the Cincinnati Symphony and Metropolitan Opera orchestras. His interest in jazz developed early when he became a fan of Duke Ellington; he developed symphonic adaptations of several Ellington pieces and in 1955 composed Symphonic Tribute to Duke Ellington. Though not considered a jazz soloist, he played with jazz ensembles such as the Modern Jazz Quartet and wrote widely about aspects of popular music. He taught at the School of Jazz, Lenox, Mass., in 1959 and was the music director of the First International Jazz Festival in Washington in 1962. He also taught at the Yale School of Music from 1964 to 1967. As a composer, Schuller began in the path of Anton von Webern (known for his concise 12-tone compositions). The
